would it be wise for me to invest in a sound booth, a nice mic, and pre and track my vocals at home? what i'm thinking about doing is ordering one of those pre-made vocal booths like the ones that whisper makes, getting a nice prosumer mic, mixing board, and just track my vox at home. as long as i have clean vocal takes i figure the engineer can route my vox out of his computer through his outboard gear and back into the computer to get the same effect as me tracking in his studio. my accoustic space should be as good as his, so assuming i have good, clean, strong recordings of my vox, him routing my vox through his outboard gear should be just as good as me performing there right?
I'm trying to save money by allowing myself to not have to worry about my time running out while i'm recording.

If you buy all that stuff, I don't think you'll be saving money.

But, if you have a good mic and a good soundcard (you don't need a mixer) you can create vox files that your engineer can import into the project elsewhere. You may not need the booth if you have a relatively dead space to record in, like a walk in closet full of clothes.

You don't really need an enclosed space to get a good sound. At the minimum you can line a corner with absorbing material, put a mike in the corner facing out, and sing into the corner. If you're just dying to buy something, THIS gives a similar benefit with a little more class.

Hi..Ethan,
not to jump in here, excuse me...
i was reading your Bass Trap article, Electronic magizine and had questions.

1) Can these traps still perform if a person only has 3qty 2'x4', traps on the wall?

in other words, if the traps don't go from floor to ceiling (8') is it still worth the while to hang just the 4' or so?

2) Would you recommend placing these 4' sections side by side or spacing in between each type of trap?

hope your online!

Cat,

The more bass traps the better, but three is infinitely better than none! ;)

> Would you recommend placing these 4' sections side by side or spacing in between each type of trap? <

Bass traps do the most good when placed in or near the room corners.

thanks everyone

i appreciate all of the wonderful feedback, i was interested in the booth because it seems like it will isolate all of the sound within the booth. i live in an apartment complex so i don't want to have any complaints from my neighbors. I also considered the fact that i can experiment with different ways to sound on the recording, and not have to worry about the clock.
