Hello,

I would like some feedback on this mix

It's mixed ITB and I don't really like it , finding it dull and lifeless...We're trying to get a sound like old Neil Young records, The Band, T-rex and so on, but It's missing that presence and warmth that seems very hard to get with software? It's probably me not having the skills to get it out...

I recorded this band in a Studio Room using mostly old mics and a Mackie Onyx 1640 firewire into cubase 5.

Drums Rogers vintage kit 60's with Gretsch snare (welll tuned)

Toms : Beyer Soundstar X1N
Overheads : C 414 B-ULS
Kick : Reslo RV Ribbon
Snare : Beyer M81
Bottom : MD 421
Room : AKG Solidtube
Also 2 old and crappy mics were used to give some mojo/grit

Mainly used URS PHAT C and PSP Vintage warmer on drums for compression
Almost no EQ except cutting an annoying spike of low/mid in the kick
Also pushed some 150-200 hz in the snare for weight
Used EMI RS135 for presence

Guitars : vintage Gretsch on silverface fender combo

Sennheiser e609 close
AT4040 Room
Tracks classic comp

Bass : Fender Pbass and ampeg

Audix D6 close
URS Phat C

Vocals

AKG Solidtube
Lofi mic through RE201 Space Echo
Beta 52 (singer had very middy voice, so tried it & worked well)

SSL Mono comp vst
Psp Vintage warmer
EMI RS135
Altiverb EMT Plate

Master channel : Some mild limiting from Sonnox oxford limiter

Ofcourse this is just stuff I used , I know how important mic placement , what kind of musicians and the room and all the other aspects are, but that would be a hell of a lot to decribe :)

Thanx

Sounds to me like you need to crank up the guitar amp more, rather than try to replicate the effect in the mix afterwards. I think that's the kind of sound you're going for from what you've said anyway.

The rhythm guitar that you let ring out for each measure is muddy. I'm hearing what cobalt is hearing - we should be able to hear that amp breaking up and sagging while it's ringing out. Also, fuzz bass has its place, but i think it is also contributing to the extra negative noise and causing you to lose your bottom end clarity. Acoustic rhythm needs to be brightened up and brought up higher in the mix. I love the song. And it is a great nod to Neil.

Hey thanx for the feedback, The chords on guitar we're done with a distorted spring reverb unit instead of a cranked amp, I agree that is muddy and clouds the mix, I already did a new mix with a lot of clearing up in the acoustic guitar and guitars allround. I think the bass is indeed a little to fuzzy....Will post a new mix !
Thanx for the comments, and yes It's a great band with some really nice songs
