would going from layla 24 to a digi 001 be a downgrade?

I've been offered a digidesign 001 with pro tools LE. Would this be a downgrade from my Layla 24? I know the layla has 96k sampling compared to the digi's 48k.

Do you even use 96k? I have 2 Layla's and I rarely go above 48.

If it's being given to you free, why not just try it out? Your own ears will tell you better than I could.

Just curious - what software are you using now?

Well, it has been offered to me, but at the price of $450. Granted, I don't always use the layla at 96k. I've been using cool edit pro, but am going to be upgrading to either cubase sx or nuendo.

...and I guess the most attractive part of the digidesign is that it works in pro tools, in which tracks are easily transferrable to other (larger) studios.

yes, it would be a downgrade. not really because of how well or poorly either hardware/software works...but more because you would never be able to upgrade the 001 and the PT LE that comes with it. The last version to work with the 001 is and will only be 6.4. Digi isn't going to make their software compatible with it anymore. And they just came out with 6.7

you mean a session saved in 6.4 opened up in 6.7?
probably, i wouldn't see why not. I haven't tried it yet since I'm still waiting for my 6.7 to come

but if I bought 6.7 wouldnt that eventually be obsolete as well? and if the 001 is a good system and the PT could be read by other studios, why is that a downgrade for me right now?

i'm saying that the 001 is/will be soon obsolete. it's just like the Mix Systems or the Audio Media cards that Digi made. Yeah, they still work and all, but you won't be able to use the latest software version with them. Same with the 001...you won't be able to use anything beyond 6.4 anymore. For now, it might be okay for you to use, but once everyone starts incoporating 6.7 in their studios or when Digi starts making more updates, I think you'll see the 001 start to disappear.

i'm just saying down the road, it's probably the next thing to become obsolete. that's the problem with computers and equipment...there's always a new and better version coming out soon to replace what you just bought. grab the 001 if you really want it, but you may find soon that you like 6.7, or want to use 6.7 sessions at home. or even 7.0 whenever that comes out.

I agree with bennychico11. Are you worried about this because the Layla 24/96 has been discontinued? Echo is going to keep supporting it, so that shouldn't deter you from keeping it if it's doing the job you want it to do. I know I love mine, and have no plans to get the 3G (or anything else) just because it's there.

well, really, my drummer is pushing me to go to pro tools because of the ability for other, bigger studios to be able to master the whole project with no problems. This is a good idea, and I now have the ability to pick up the digi001 for a good price, but the voice in the back of my head is saying "one step forward, two steps backwards."

I have been using nuendo with great results but we are working on some new tracks for our demo in another studio (that has ties to a really good mastering studio in town). The mastering studio can only do a two-track master on the older stuff because our project is in nuendo. I guess I'll just save my money and maybe upgrade to digi 002 in the future, if at all.

thanks, guys,
