Worth setting up spare PC for softsynths?

Hey guys,

I'm starting to delve into the sordid world of softsynths and I'm wondering if it might be worth setting up a dedicated computer to run them. I have a spare PC right here that doesn't do too much at the moment besides play DVDs, its a Celeron 366 running at 550. I just got a Sound Blaster Live to use with the APSLive drivers so I can use soundfonts and have decently low latency for softsynths. My main PC is a Celeron 566 running at 850 with 256MB. My plan was to just install the SB Live in the second box and sequence it from the other one, or sequence it locally and then copy the tracks over to the main PC for mixing. Any ideas? Is all the CPU overhead worth setting up the second box or should I keep it all in one for simplicity?

I have seriously considered doing something like that myself. The only problem is finding a suitable soundcard. I like the simplicity of sondfonds etc, but the SB Live doesn’t have a 44.1KHz digital out (only 48KHz), so how could I hook it up to the SPDIF of my RME card without having to convert the sample rate (I record everything at 44.1KHz).
