i read that they add a lot of warmth etc to the mix, but i really don't understand what it is, and what the point of it is... is it just an interface that protects the singal form being destroyed going into the cpu???

and if it makes your sound that much better, than does anyone have a suggestion on a good one to buy for a good price???

It does NOT add warmth (I'm beginning to hate that term). A good word clcok generator can make a converter with a lower quality clock sound a little better. Their traditional use is to syncronize multiple digital devices together so they'll play nice together. I use a Lucid GenX6 which is probably the best least expensive clocks.
 
Yeah Track rat's right but note that it's WORD clock. Might help you some if you're googling or whatever.
