I am working with a vocal condensor mic is this my first problem is this not going to sound good is this the reason my drums sound like complete shit? Should I go out and buy 2 pencil condencers if sooo what are 2 cheap pencils I can buy for under 100-150? I am never satisfied with my drums and I am not going to stop trying until I am.

You have given no specific info as to why your drums sound like shit.......

It could be the kit.....tuning, heads, etc., It could be the room you're recording in and it could be mic placement. OR it is probably a combination of these things.

Thing is, that 1) no amount of mics will fix these issues, and 2) it is possible to get a good drum track using one LD condenser mic if the above issues are correctly addressed, sure it wont give you the ability to do any stereo panning but do you need that?

I like your determination. It's a battle you'll be fighting for a long time, but it's such an interesting one.

Ive tried 2 drum sets. An export and an older pearl set both sound very similar and both give me the same vibe. I am pretty sure that it is becuase I cant go stereo that I am getting that dry feeling. Anyway I need to get pencil condensors sometime anyway soo why not sooner then later and yes I AM DETERMINED!!! I WILL FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT!

If you're happy with the way the drums sound acoustically, then the next step is mic placement. Stereo won't automatically give you a less dry feeling. What mic are you using, and how have you been placing it? Think of your 1 mic as a room mic, rather than an overhead, and maybe you'll get more of what you're looking for. Of course the room you're recording in is going to be a huge factor. there may be only so much "wet" you're going to be able to naturally achieve.

1 well placed Omni-directional mic is often times all you need for drums, particularly if you have a nice room. That's how they did it in the
olden-timey days.

I think my room sounds like shit though lol not sure. I parted with the 100 bucks and bought the joe meek 27s ill see if they help if not ILL STILL KEEP TRYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

does your bass drum sound good

try recording your bass drum with a speaker, or is that a waste of energy as well
