Working on AN Epic

I am working on a new set of tunes (I think it will be three in all) that all deal with a different viewpoint on a single topic. I am working on the music matching the emotion of the lyrics, and I am working on taking a particular melodic idea and/or rhythm pattern to be used at some point in all three songs, to kind of bring them all together.

Anyone worked on something like this?

I wrote a rock opera once. Does that count?

Sure! LOL.

How did you go about it? My project started with an idea for 3 songs that work together. We've got the first one done, and the second in the works. The second is tied in to the first by sharing a rhythmic pattern of 16th notes and triplets. We repeat that phrase in both songs. Not sure what we'll do for the 3rd.

Sorry, but is it possible to edit the title of a post? Should be "Working on an epic" instead of "a epic."

It's frying my publication editor brain! :)

Sorry about that...Now that I saw that it, it was driving me crazy too.

The rock opera I wrote just kind of happened organically.

One of my bandmates said, "hey Steve I've got a great idea for a rock opera based on the song 'glow girl'. It'll be all about rebirth and reincarnation."

He then charged me with writing a few songs for it. I was told to write a humorous song about the hilarious ways the protagonists had died previously in previous lives.

So I wrote a song about this.

Then I wrote two interconnected songs about this.

Then I wrote some more songs expanding on the protagonists' relationship in the iteration of their lives from the prior two songs.

Then I expanded that plot line until it was about 10 songs.

Then I took one of the simpler songs, dubbed it a "theme" and recycled it and pasted it in various places throughout the story.

Then I told my bandmate what I had done.

Then he gave up on the project and told me that it was all mine.

Then I wrote a last few songs to resolve the plot.

Now I just need to record it.
