Woofer/tweeter needs replacement?

I've got a question about my Alesis Monitor Ones. When I play a good rock album through them (The Cult - Love :cool: ) even at very loud volume, they sound just fine, even pretty amazing, but as soon as I play some electronic music or even something like Radiohead's Kid A, my right speaker seems to have a blown woofer or tweeter. I thought if you blew a woofer or a tweeter, you would be sure to notice, but in this case, I'm not too sure. Is there a way to tell for sure? Can a cone blow, but still function at certain frequencies/volumes without noticing? I'm confused... Your help is much appreciated.

I don't have your particular monitors, but am experiencing the very same problem with my JBL 4406's. It is always the same monitor, regardless of which channel it services, and the problem is intermittant. Sometimes I can have a real bassy tune playing loudly through these monitors - with NO problem whatsoever. Then, I can mellow it down (playing something else at 1/2 to 3/4 of the volume as before), and hear that dreaded buzzing. It drives me to a near batty state, and I have tried everything that I know how to rectify it. But I'll just have to endure it until I can afford another pair of monitors (these are quite old, anyway, but had served me well until this came about).
 
The thing is I want to sell mine to buy a new pair, but I can't exactly put them up for sale on eBay if there's an issue with one of the woofers or tweeters. The thing is, I can't tell for sure? Like I said, the issue only is apparent whith a certain type of music.

I know exactly where you are coming from, because it was my initial intent to sell the monitors I have (and my Alesis RA100 power amp) for the purpose of buying a pair of new "Active" monitors. I was just saying that I wouldn't be under such a cloud of confusion, regarding my situation, if it were a problem affecting both speakers when played from the same amp channel. I would then be able to narrow the problematic area down to the amp instead. What stymmies me, though, is the fact that it is always the same monitor which suffers - but only intermittantly. Some music will play just fine, no matter the decibel level, while other types - even at lower levels - will cause the buzzing in this one speaker. The one thing that I do know is that it emanates from the woofer. At any rate, I hope that you are able come to a head with this situation of yours - and get them to a saleable condition for the purpose of gaining the funds needed for your desired monitors.

I, too, hope to have a new pair before long.
 
You guys may be having problems with the crossover, or a bad connection in a cable or one of the jacks, not the drivers. A faulty solder joint or a component close to the edge of failure could give the symptoms you describe, especially as the problem is intermittent. Solder joints in speakers get a lot of vibration.
 
If your speakers are sourcing from some kind of analog mixer, it could even be a dirty pot. Or for that matter a dirty pot on the power amp.
 
I just noticed something else: the volume level from the right speaker seems to fade-out and back in again - it's not a total cutoff of the sound - it really sounds like someone's lowering the volume with a fader! :confused: . It's really weird: what is up with it? What would be the fix? It doesn't seem to be either of the tweeter or the woofer that's blown but something else. Is this a failing crossover symptom? Can these be easily fixed if this is what's causing the problem? help! THXS!!!!
