Wondering if you guys can help us out on what we should do

hi

right this is our first tim doing anythin like this so we are pretty much right at the begining.

our band would like to start recording some of our stuff and we would like to know how we should go about it.

the equipment we have is as follows:
2 x Ibanez guitars
1 x Ibanez bass quitar
1 x Alesis DM5 electric drum kit with SURGE
1 x Shure SM58 microphone
1 x Fostex MR8 multitracker
1 x Keyboard (will get the name of it soon incase it helps)

we plan on recording the keyboard and using the recording live on the laptop through the PA while we play the other instuments.

we also would like to record out songs properly.

what we would like to know is what should we get for this?
i heard that you should use a 7200rpm is this true?

what software should we use? cubase? ableton live?

what soundcard? preamps?

what sort of specs should we be looking at for this to all run nicely?

how should we set this all up seeing as though we have a multitracker as well?

sorry for all the n00bish questions but we really what to do this the right way.

Its generally better to have a 7200 rpm hd than a 5400 one, but with today's large HD caches, we frequently record 24 tracks of 48khz 24 bit on our 5400 during live shows
 
I wouldn't drag your laptop to a show to play a recording of a keyboard. It just seems a bit much and the laptop could be stolen or broken.

The big deal about playing to prerecorded tracks is getting your drummer to play to a click. You will have to record the keys to a metronome and the drummer will have to have headphones and play to that metronome live.

The cheapest/easiest way to do this is to take the keyboard recording and pan it to the left and pan the metronome to the right. Load it into your ipod and get an adapter to split the left and right channels. Plug the left into a DI box for the PA and plug the right into a headphone amp for the drummer.

There are a couple different ways to do it.

1. put a stereo pair of mics in the audience

2. Get a splitter box and plug all the mics into that, then one split goes to the snake, the other goes to the recorder

3. take the direct out from the monitor board or FOH console, assuming that it has direct outputs.

For # 2 and #3, you will need a multi-track recorder with as many inputs as you have mics on stage. You might want to have a couple extra mics pointing at the audience to get that sound as well.
 
ok cool what software should we usefor this?
i hear cubase and abelton live are really good

what soundcard should we use? i dont really know much about them and these preamp things.

we want to record them in our home as good as possible btw, sorry if i did not make this clear.
