I just want to say thank you to everyone here that has helped me. I have come a long way. Still a long way to go, but to me the difference is remarkable.
Here is the first time I recorded/mixed this song -



And here is a new recording/mix -



The new one is just a quick mix, it still needs some work. Please tear it apart and tell me what is still wrong. It's a "live" recording. He just can't play and sing seperately, but I don't think it matters as much as I originally thought.

Edit #2 - Can anyone tell me if there is a terrible high freq clip in these? I am going to get good monitors very soon, this just sucks...

I like your voice. It reminds me a bit of Harry Chapin. There's a nice melody here, too. I didn't notice any clipping.

Have you considering adding other instruments? It might help fill this out. Just a thought. Nice recording!

Hey-

Definately a noticable improvement on try 1 to 2.

The one thing that is sticking out to me is how off balance the guitar is. This is probably due to his guitar more than your recording, but it's hitting the low fundamental tones way hotter than the rest. It sounds like a Martin dreadnaught being played fingerstyle, which is why most people use 000 sized guitars for that. If it was more balanced the song would end up alot richer, too. Maybe you want to try some alternate micing techniques for him, though I see you're channelged already with the singing and playing at the same time. When i had to deal with that, I ended up taping a big piece of cardboard under the vocal mic to block some sound from the guitar.

Anyways, good to see this place is helping you out, as it has done for many of us!

H2H - He is playing finger style, and it is kinda boomy, I think I can take most of that out when I remix it. Most of his other songs are not as bad as that one. Did you listen to the other two? I miked him at the 12th and bridge, so if I cut the bridge mike down a bit, it should lessen somewhat.

GM - Thanks for the clipping comment. I only hear it on my HT system. I think something is wrong with it. I've listened to it on 6 different sources, and it's only on the one, and it is BAD. You could't miss it.


What would you guys (or anybody else) suggest to improve it? C'mon 70 some odd people have listened, and only 2 comments?!?!?!!?!?!?

I do realize that they are too bright, and the guitar is a bit boomy.

Somebody has got to have another suggestion, or at least a comment.

No offense, but on my monitors the guitar sounds like it was recorded using a $10 Labtech computer mic. The vocal sounds good though. Ouch What happened? I like this guy's music. Got a couple of his songs saved.

I'm referring to the last version of Julia's song that you posted. The guitar on Rise and Walk Away doesn't sound that bad. I think this is, in a large part, an instrument issue. He needs a better guitar for recording, IMO. I believe I'd try three mics on him, two fairly close-micing the guitar and one right up on his head for the vocal. And maybe deaden the space around him a bit...hang some blankets or something. He could go back after the first take with the guitar and vocal and do another guitar track. Pan the guitar tracks either side of the vocal to fill it out. Shoot, I don't know. Just spitting out some ideas. Keep trying.
