wiring ?

hey guys, simple question here...

i've got belden 8451 running through the walls now and i'm ready to start soldering....but, when doing xlr's

red wire=pin#2
black wire=pin#3
bare wire=pin#1

what about the foil shield?
do i do anything with it?
if so what?
and can it be soldered...i'm thinking not, but i've never tried.

also i'm mounting both ends in wood panels and was thinking i'd simply solder in a common ground going to all the chassis...but is this even nessasary?

The bare wire and the shield are connected together. You trim off the foil and solder the wire only.
