I need to make some cables in order to run my pre-amp outputs to a patch bay. The cables will have XLR at one end and TRS at the other.

I know I need to tie the braid to the connector case at both ends.

Is there a standard convention for which XLR pins should connect to the tip and ring of the TRS plug?

i hope i'm correct;µ

the TIP of the trs --> pin 2 of XLR
the Ring of the trs--> pin 3 of XLR
the sleeve of trs ---> pin 1 of XLR

and...i got an additional question about patchbays:
do we always have to use TRS cables on a patchbay ?
i guess so, but i'm a patchbay newbie, and damn, its hard shit to understand..

i hope this helped,
cheers

Your XLR/TRS wiring info is what I've seen elsewhere on the web, just wanted some independant verification - thanks.

As far your question - I have both unbalanced and balanced devices hooked up to my patch bay and use only TRS patch cables. No problems yet.

Get a copy of The Sound Reinforcement Handbook by Gary Davis, about $30. It's got the answer to every kind of question about cables (no optical, though).
