This question needs to be answered twice: the first time for 4 track recording and the second for recording with an ADAT.

The question is what types of cords should I be using? What price range is necessary for me to achieve a good recording?

Thanks

You should use cords where one end fits into the output and the other into the input. Your local music store should be able to help you. How much the cords affect the sound is a matter of religion, so what cables you should buy is matter of how religious you are and your budget.

The brand most commonly named is "monster cables".

Search for "monster cables" on this BBS and you'll find endelss discussions on the topic.

Monster Cable in North America is generally geared towards the hi-fi audio market, not so much for studio applications (although of course, you CAN use it -- it's just usually priced out of practical range mostly to accommodate audiophiles who deep down really like to believe they're getting bang for their expensive buck!) :p

The defacto studio standard is cable made by Mogami or Canare.

Bruce, I want to thank you for giving me permission NOT to spend 30 bucks for a 6' piece of cord. Thank you.

Yo Slim & Thin One:

Bruce knows his stuff and I enjoy reading his comments about gear and studio.

I did buy a couple of Monster cords; one for my Keyboard/Synthesizer and another for my mic connection for vocals.

Both seem to do a good job; but, I used ProCo and Excalibar cables in the past and they worked too.

I'd like to find a place to buy a Mogami cable, say ten footer, for my Syn/or/mic but haven't spotted any. I'm sure Bruce will give me a site.

Thanks,

Green Hornet

Hmmm... I never bought cables on-line - when I wired up, I went to a local shop and ordered them custom....

Oh actually, come to think of it, I know Sweetwater sound does cable... try http://www.sweetwater.com... I've only ever bought Cramolin (studio grade contact cleaner - now called DeOxit) from them (couldn't get it easily here locally!) and they were helpful... you could try them...

:)

Bruce

Green Hornet... thanks for your kind words! :)

Full Compass

Recording Engineer is correct about Full Compass. Their site is http://www.fullcompass.com (you have to call them to order and you might need to order their printed catalogue to review the full selection - how quaint).

for the money you spend on premade cables you can purchase the plugs, cable and a soldering iron.

I reckon it's worth learning how to wire your own leads because you can then fix them if they fuck up plus you can quickly wip up a mod if required. You can also save heaps on prewired patchbays etc.

Cheers
John ;)

Hey bvaleria, Wackid Radio on Parkdale (Or is it Kirkwood?, you know the street) used to sell that deOxit stuff. Maybe they still do.

John's right... but when I was doing the wiring for my own studio, I didn't have the patience, nor the time, to solder and prep a good 1000+ connectors!!! (Although it would have been cheaper....) So I got in touch with several local area dealers and let them bid for it - ended up with a GREAT price on the whole deal....
