i do love smilies...
hi,

i'm going to university next year to study trombone (popular music studies, i.e. jazz and funk :p) and i'm very interested in buying a wireless clip on microphone that would be useful in the large amount of gigs i hope to be playing... having the stage freedom would be Very helpful.

it's all very new to me though, and i don't really know what i'm looking at on manufacturers websites :p i have a fairly solid "working knowledge" (i.e. i don't know how they work, but i know what they do :p) of microphones now - i have a small home studio and control the sound at band practises now. but if anyone could give any advice it would be very much appreciated :) i'm looking to spend up to £200 (about $400ish)

thanks!

Andy.

Speaking as a trombone player, if you need a mic, you're not playing loudly enough. :D

Speaking as a recording geek, I like ribbons on trombone, but a Shure 565 is a good second. I can't think of anything with a small diaphragm that I'd use on a trombone. SDCs just lose the meat of the sound in my experience, especially at close range. I can't imagine any clip-on mic would sound good. I mean, maybe somebody builds one that does---I'm certainly not going to say it's impossible, but my gut says it isn't likely. A few inches from the bell is just not the right place to mic a trombone.

Get a used Shure 565 and put it on a stand at about three feet. Failing that, disassemble an SM57 and rip out all the foam.

Just my $0.02.

apologies, maybe i didn't make myself clear enough.

i'm looking to use this mic for live use (i.e. at gigs) i don't own a ribbon and never used one, but i've read enough about them to know they're too delicate to use on stage :p i've seen some of my faveourite trombone players (Dennis Rollins :) !) use them on stage, to great effect. i would never expect to use one for recording.

does that 'change your answer?' :D

Many brass players use shure wireless systems with the shure beta 98 clipped on the bell. In a live situation it works out pretty well.

thank you kindly for the replies.

how would i know if a certain clip on mic is compatible with a particular wireless system? or would you always just use a prebuilt package by a company?

Ta!

Andy.

They'll tell you, usually pretty obviously in the info, as that is a common question, and usually means ordering the mic a certain way anyway. If you don't see any listing, call or email and ask.
