WinDVD compression

Ok so this has bugged me for a while, I'm using WinDVD4, and basically the dynamic range of the audio signal is being compressed seemingly uneccessarily. Currently listening to Opeths 'Ghost Reveries' in 5.1 using WinDVD and the signal is blatantly being compressed somwhat. It's really annoying during movies too. The volume just suddenly dips when things get too loud. Anyone ever had a problem with this? Anyone know how to stop it?

Athlon XP 3200+
1gb RAM
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro (No, I don't use it for recording, before anyone starts on that one)
Windows XP Pro
None of the other stuff seems particularly pertinent.

It could be my audigy I spose, but it doesn't do it with normal audio, like CD's, wavs etc. Just DVD's.

Make sure you don't have a midnight mode engaged, or whatever WinDVD calls it....I would look under options/audio or something like that.

My friend has the new SoundBlaster card. It does have a compression feature, called "Loudness Maximizer" or something like that. It's turned on by default in the settings.

So it might not be a problem with WinDVD. Could be playback problems with your sound card. I'd go through all the settings.
