Bit of an annoying problem here..I've been tweaking up my laptop to get it running nice and fast for my firepod, and what I want is two separate accounts, one for music (with just a selection of programs, vsts and basically nothing else) and the other for work/leisure. all is well, except I want to get rid of programs such as WinDVD from my music account, but not from my other. so its not kinda hanging around, i want to streamline!
im sure there's a really simple solution but I cant work it out and I don't want to uninstall stuff from one account and then lose it totally. any ideas?
cheers

you can disable certain programs from starting when you login to your music account - but if you uninstall, it's uninstalled everywhere (or when you install, some installers ask you if you want it installed on all user accounts, etc.).

However, chances are if you say "install" on all accounts...it's still just putting a menu in the start folder, some icons on your desktop, and perhaps starting something "at startup." anyway.

so, go to:
start
run
msconfig

go to the start up tab.

make your pics! (just uncheck whatever you don't want to come up on startup).

I'm pretty sure, yet not POSITIVE, that this will only affect the account that you are in while doing it. Don't take my word, but you can always revert back to the settings before if it's a problem anyway.

holler.

I just tried, but in my "normal" account the MSconfig changes were also applied... any ideas on how to change program startup settings in a seperate account?

thanks.

the way i do it with accounts is:

1. diable the programs from starting GLOBALLY with msconfig
2. log into your "non-music" account and add shortcuts of the program .exe files that you want to load into the startup folder in "documents and settings".
3. log into your "music" account and the same for the programs you want to load up in there.

Also, you may want to use hardware profiles to further strip down your music account.
Set up 2 hardware profiles, one with all your hardware working and the other having hardware disabled that you on't need with the music account (ethernet, printer, etc). Before windows loads, it will ask you what profile you want to load, then the account login screen will come up, choose your music account.

Thanks!

So the startup folder for every user more or less functions as a Msconfig, in that respect that the programs you specify (by dragging them into it) will run at startup? Didn't know that!

Have you already disabled all the unneeded services Billy wants you to run? There are a ton of them.

I unticked most of Billy's pseudo-mandatory thingy's :)
For my virusscanner/firewall I'm trying to figure out which file I need to put in the startup folder, without opening a GUI window at startup.

Also; with the services.msc you can easily start/stop programs, and assign them to different hardware profiles. This seems ideal, since you wouldn't need to create and extra account (it's all in the hw-profile)... the problem is, my virusscanner got twitchy; I thought I'd completely disabled it, but it still starts, but only halfway.
Anyway, anyone have any experience with this method?

Thanks,
Nicky

I had the same deal with my virus-scanner, I finally ended up just keeping that service running on both profiles,

And that's about the most redundant -and I think RAM consuming- process when recording with your ethernet card switched off...
why isn't there an option to do this per account? Damn you, B to the Gizzle
