windows XP and firewire 410 help needed.

SORRY for starting another m-audio firewire 410 thread, but i didn't want to hijack the other guys thread.

i posted this at a pctech forum, but thought i would see if you guys would be able to help.

i'm having problems with my M-Audio Firewire 410.

my comp specs (which i built almost a year ago):

windows XP Pro, service pack 1
Pentium 4 2400
1024 Ram
asus P4PE
(and some other stuff i don't remember)

problem is i cannot get the 410 to register as a recording device, in the audio control panel, nor in any of the recording software demos i've been using (Sonar, Audacity, Cool Edit Pro, Adobe Audition...).

for those of you who are familiar with the 410, sometimes the 410 is connected, sometimes, it disconnects, and the bootloader (whatever that is) is connected, and it goes back and forth between the two, but neither of the times can i use the thing to record.

i called their tech support. i went through tthe whole installation thing again... blah blh blah... uninstalled, reinstalled ( i knew what i was doing the first time... after all i was able to build this computer). updated drivers. and still when i pluged in the 410 into the computer, it would not show as a recording device.

Next thing we did was check IRQ settings. we had found that my PCI firewire card was on IRQ 22, which it was sharing with two other things. so i uninstalled, put the card into another PCI slot, and got it onto IRQ 20 by itself with nothing else on it. uninstalled the 410 drivers.software, reinstalled, restarted, pluged in the 410, and still nothing. i called the same tech support guy again. he said something about anything from IRQ 15 and above was virtual, and i should keep trying till i get it on it's own IRQ# under 15, then if it still doesn't work, let him know.

well, i haven't been able to get it under 15 yet. but now what i'm left wondering is:
is the tech support guy making sense?
anyone ever had this problem?
Can i manually give it an IRQ number?
if not the IRQ, what else could it be, besides just a defective device. i know the firewire card has worked in the past cause i plug my ipod into it all the time.

oh, and i almost forgot, i also tried to use it on the same computer but on windows 2000 Pro service pack 3, and when i plug the 410 in, the computer FREEZES.

i really don't think the 410 is faulty. there must be something wrong with my computer settings somwhere, since after all, i did put it together--i must have missed a few things.

Any Suggestions?

Could it be an issue with the firewire card ? Can you try using the 410 on another PC that has firewire built into the motherboard ?

that would make a lot of sense. i can't think of anyone with firewire ports on their laptops/desktops., or else i'd have don e it by now. but i'll have to wait till thursday or so to try that...
no wait!!! i can take it to work tomorrow, and try it on the Macs.
i'll let you guys knows what happens.
 
Just a thought, but if you try it on a MAC and it works that still won't narrow it down to what the issue is on your PC. I guess at least it will tell you if the unit is tits up or not, but it won't help you determine if it's a firewire issue or a winxp issue. Know what I mean ?
 
If it works on the Mac .... try and determine what chipset the Firewire controller use on the Mac. Texas Instruments based chipsets seem to be the most favorable as far as trouble free.
You can check the Device Manager on your machine to see what chipset your IEEE 1394 Host Controller uses.

That's true - I use a Tascam fw-1884 (firewire unit) and I seem to remember the manual mentioning that the 1394 interface must be an OHCI compliant interface. Not sure what the differences are or if there are any, but mine is and it works. Tascam also supplied a hotfix for firewire troubles, which I didn't have to install as my system was up to date.
 
IT WORKS!!!!

so i did NOT try it on the mac, but a guy at the PCMech forum brought up that my motherboard (ASUS P4PE) has integrated firewire. When i built the system a year ago, i never connected the firewire cable, thinking i didn't need it cause i had the PCI card... also i had no idea HOW to connect it. So this morning, i soent the time and connected it, and IT WORKS!

the PCI card was Texas Instrument--didn't work
The Integrated FW chip is VIA OHCI compliant as VESTAST mentioned.

only now my wireless network card is switching between network available/network not available. :eek:

Hopefully the maudio unit works ok for you now :)
