I recently upgraded my WindowsXP to Vista just to have a seperate computer to record on but when i record i hear a loud hissing noise in the background. Ive tried everything .. Thanks for any help.

Is it a Dell? They are reportedly bad for background noise out of the headphone. I have a Dell Latitude D610 with this problem. It might be the soundcard. Sigma Tel Audio Card in mine....:(

What gear? Is this pc hooked to the net? What processes are running in the background? Did it do this when XP was on it?

theres no other programs runing and theres no net hooked up to it either.. am using stock components that the computer came with

You're going to have to be more specific or it's just a guessing game...

What microphone? A PC mic?
Are you using a preamp or just plugging the mic directly into the sound card?
Do you know what kind of sound card it has in there?
What recording software are you using?

am using a normal cheap mic but am planning on buying an expensive studio mic .. its plugged directly into the pc. i dnt kno the soundcard and av tried using magix, cool edit and acoustica mixcraft but still same problem

I'm not getting good feedback on Vista all the way around. I know a lot of people that "upgraded" to it, and have not turn back to XP. Personally, I always give ANY new OS a year or so before "upgrading" my recording puters.

is it possible you are recording at too low a volume and having to turn up the recording ,thus raising the floor noise ?(hiss)

try to record at -10db peek and see if it goes away.
when you say the mic is pluged into the pc i presume that is drectly into the mic jack socket on the soundcard ?
if so check it is in the mic socket and not the line input socket.
if any other audio playback is fine then i think the soundcard and its drivers are fine.
have you tried the mic on another pc to make sure its ok ?
just a few things it could be
could be one could be none who knows:D
