odd ball question. I have windows xp on a computer, I want to scrap that computer and install xp on another computer. I dont feel I should have to buy a second copy if I am taking the first computer offline. I have installed xp already on second computer but I have 30 days to activate. Does anyone know if this is cool with microsoft seeing that I did buy the software and will still be running it on only 1 computer? I refuse to pay Microsoft 35 buck to answer this question.

yeah, you'll be fine. activate it...Microsoft won't know the difference. They just want to see proof that you have a legit copy.

Near as I understand it, the software is per owner, not per box, though not simultaneously. That is, you can put it on 60 computers, just not at the same time. Having said that, I have put my copy on at least 15 computers (i go through a lot) and microsoft is none the wiser.

Microsoft states that it's 1 license per owner & maximum of 2 computers can have that license.... now that's what they stated. Reality is yeah you can put that same license in 100 computers that you 'own' if you wanted to. I've actually heard that some people really go out and buy 2 licenses for 2 of their own computers... strange isn't it? you should be ok..

I'll have to look in the xp box, I could have sworn it said only one computer. I very well may be wrong. I'd like to rebuild the old computer then install xp on it again. It kind of pisses me off that I have to buy a second and third copy you know, one for each computer. I think Bill Gates has enough money. I'm all for buying software but this can get stupid. I love my Drumagog where they let you put the single purchase software go on as many computers as you like. Thanks for info
Jim.

My XP box say license for one computer. Reallity is how do they know unless there is some type of tracer when you update. What would they do if they found out, make me buy another copy anyways?

every time you go to an MS owned website they check you license... if they decided you're OEM key is pirated you no longer get updates... and can no longer activate, etc. pain in the ass when it happens...

also you can only activate online 3 times before you have to actually call MS to get the activation code... that was a real pain in the ass... atleast that was the way it worked when I last used XP...

also you can only activate online 3 times

it may be only once. All you have to do is call them though and they will reactivate it
