so here's the goods.

about 4-5 times since i've got my computer...during a long recording session...the computer will just shut off completely, and restart itself. i mean, no warning whatsoever...haha

so when it starts up, WINXP tells me "your system has recovered from a serious error, please send error report to microsoft." Of course, i send it everytime this happens. So now, Instead of telling me "we dont know the answer to your problem"...they tell me "A device driver installed on your system caused the problem, but we cannot determine the precise cause. "

now, assuming that since it only does this DURING RECORDING...i take it that my Delta44 is the problem...the drivers for it, that is.

Note: This does not happen ALL the time i record. Usually if i am spending a day recording a band, it will do it once during the day. If i'm lucky, i'll get by the day without any problems like that.

I am using Ntrack to Record.

My comp stats are:

AMD Athlon® XP-2000+ Processor AS22
60GB 7200 RPM UDMA 133
512MB PC2700 333MHZ DDR MEMORY
ASUS A7V333 KT333 MB W/ ATA133, USB 2.0, 5.1 AUDIO
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Nvidia TNT-2 M64 32MB AGP

any ideas?
and yes, i sent this to maudio tech support.

in addition, i found this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322205
which states:

Symptoms
After you install a new hardware device or new software, your computer may start to restart spontaneously, or you may receive error messages on a blue screen.
Cause
This behavior is typically caused by a device driver that is not correct for the version of Windows on which you installed it. Or, the device driver may have been poorly written, which can cause Windows to stop working correctly.

and would you lookie here..... sort by error - and it lists 4 of this same error since the computer has arrived at my doorstep, and i've been recording...

coinidence? i think now.

Hmm forgot to say anything useful,

Wait for a weekend when you don't need the comp. and take off the delta drivers completely. Also anything else that your not certain about. See if it works then.

Though i suppose this is obvious...

have you installed any software that uses pace antipiracy software? I'm not sure which companies use this, though I do know that digidesign uses it and so does waves. This writes data directly to your harddrive and can cause spontaneous reboots. (I've had em myself)

If it isn't that, I have no clue

spontanerous reboots? then why do they put it in there if it makes thier software unstable? ...jeez.

angermyer - if i took off the delta drivers, i woulnd't be able to record to see if it rebooted or not...haha. so that wouldn't work.

Asus A7V

those error messages are so ludicrous i doubt Microsoft even understands them. You mentioned you have an Asus A7V motherboard..which i am almost certain has the via chipset on it. You might want to go to www.viahardware.com and download the latest 4-in-1 drivers. It (sometimes!) helps your computer with stability issues and makes it run a lil faster as well. You should try that out definitely.

they make no "4 in 1" driver for windows XP, should i try installing the "4 in 1" for the other windows? ha.

Do NOT install 4 in 1s with WinXP.

Just install the bus mastering driver (580_312 or something like that). XP will install all the required drivers on its own.

Have you also spoken to Flavio?

Do you still have the onboard audio card enabled? You might try disabling that completely (via CMOS or a jumper on the MB) and see if it still happens - it could be a conflict. Also, if you haven't disabled ACPI, you could try that too.

can you direct me to that driver perhaps? haha...cant seem to find it...

yeah i've definately spoken to flavio plenty, but i dont think it is an ntrack problem..... my ntrack problems seem to be fixed now (ntrack used to crash constantly - i posted about 4-5 3 page topics on that issue at ntrack.com...lol)..

onboard IS enabled still - it is a card that is directly on the motherboard, so i cant take it out or anything like that. in additino, evertime i uninstall the driver for that onboard card, windows XP installs it automatically once windows restarts, cant seem to avoid that.
and yes - ACPI is disabled.

You will definitely find an option to disable onboard audio in BIOS. in different BIOSes it's called differently and the option is sometimes below 2-3 layers. A quick lok at the mobo manual will let you know how to disable it. In case you cannot find the manual, spend an hour in the BIOs, look for onboard audio or onboard AC 97 or onboard APU. Set it to disabled.

http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/IDE_MPD3014.zip

is where you'll find the ide driver. Before installing it, run over to www.viaarena.com to figure if you'll need it. Look for it under 'drivers' and then 'ide'.

4 in 1

wow, i just went to viahardware.com and apparently it's changed hands. yes every one of the newer versions has xp support. it automatically determines what os you have and installs the proper drivers.

dlv

Musgrave is correct - the VIA 4in1 drivers automaticly detirmine which OS you run, and which VIA chipset you have, and install what is needed. It is OK for Win XP, and I have installed in on numerous XP systems without incident. It was the FIRST thing I installed when I recently upgraded my P3/Intel chipset mobo to a Gigabyte/VIA chipset mobo.

just did it last night on XP. pretty simple process. not sure if it helped anything but i didn't have any system crashes afterward, which is usually a given after about an hour of work. so i'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the silver bullet that i've been looking for for the last 5 months.

here's the update of interest to me an others who are having this problem:

In v422 they claim:
"Fixed Ending program issue under both Win2K and WinXP."

well installed it last night...it did 4in1, some IDE driver, and somethin else too...haha

seemed to go smoothly, hopefully everything is fixed!

no fix for the problem

well, it was worth a try but i still get the dreaded windows meltdown. i'm beginning to suspect this mobo/processor is just not made for this stuff. btw, I use an AMD XP1900+ on an ASUS A7M266.

Gonna go order an intel proc and mobo and see if that adds some stability.

thanks for the tip anyway.
