With so many operating systems on the market some work well with some applications, and some not so well with other's.

I have all Windows O/S 's from win98 to XP.......

I've used them all (for years) and XP is the best I've ever dealt with.

I concur. XP has been great, though I was really skeptical at first. Remember to turn off all the eye candy...unless you must have it.

i never terned off anything under XPpro.. works perfect... :)

I went back from XP to Win98, because XP didn't run smooth enough on my Celeron466 with 128mb. (And XP doesn't support my my 6 years old scanner...).

But I'll vote for Win2k. Great OS without the blinding candylook (I know it can be switched to a more conserative look but why not save the effort in the first place :) ).

Rite on U guyz........
I like running XP but I find it a bit unstable for some games, and software. Im just getting into Home Recording and I dont think that there is a compatible Version of Say, Pro Tool's for XP....

If Im wrong please tell me and I 'll check it out.

As I want to do the 4-Track to hard-drive thing to save tracks, fly
them back in to mix, then back to burn. I guess my question should be . What is the best software to do this with using XP as the O/S ?

Again Thanks 4 everything......

JD.

My vote goes to n-track: www.fasoft.com. Its inexpensive, does VST and DirectX plugs, and in general does a fantastic job for not much fuss. Works fine on my XP machine.

And you're right: no Protools for XP. Cubase SX, on the other hand, ONLY runs on XP. (shrug)

Well the Poll thingy doesn't seem to be working right now. So, WinXP for me.

I use XP but it's been a nightmare to get it to function. It's fast when it does work but I've found it to be a little less stable than 98

what are you running..98 isn't stable at all.. after 20minutes under cubase last year 98 would crash...and bad.. i can stay under sx or nuendo for ever under XPpro...what type of pc do you have?

i heard Cubase VST/32 was a quirky program all together though...

People keep asking me this question... and I keep giving them the same answer.

The best Windows OS is the newest version that fully supports your hardware & software.

It was an intel 1.3 Xeon on an Amptron mobo with 512MB RAM but the problem was actually with XP. the DHCP client kept crashing. when I record I have to go into msconfig and disable it but msconfig has a bug to where it will corrupt the "activation" information so you everyonce in a while have to reactivate the computer. . . now it is AOL IM that causes most of the problems at startup with it's little pop up window that always locks up. . . :) I don't have to deal with this while recording. . . it's just general use problems. XP seems to be an anti networking computer :)

It remeinded me of 98 because I got the "illegal operation" during a clean install like 98 always gave. but that was only the 1st of 6 fresh installs :)

Disable everything in msconfig except my aardvark manager and it records like a breeze I can ignore latency too because the Q10 is real time so I crank the buffers and precessing time in SONAR so I can play a boat load of tracks back and I just have to wait a bit for it to start playing.

I loaded XP full on a freshly formatted hard drive with a 1600Mhz Athlon....

It refused to recognize my Mona, video capture card, ethernet card and frustration. It LOOKED great. I managed to get it to at least believe I had installed cards, but could never set it right.

They mailed me a refund.

W2K, its out long enough to have service packs! A good tuned W98SE or NT4 is also great but wdm is worth going up the ladder.

All this info. is great, I think Im going to try the dual boot set-up.
create two partions, Install XP for my basic app's. Then install 2K for recording , we'll see how that works.........

Anybody try this method yet....?
Thanks for all the great posts.......

I don't understand a dual boot of XP and 2K... ???

A dual boot of 98SE and XP I can see, but why XP and 2K?? They're basically the same thing.

HighDesert Trax,

I have a dual boot with XP and 2K. I did this because I wanted the XP operating system to have nothing but recording software. Everything else (including games) is on 2K. Games can do weird things to an OS. But, If I didn't have games, I'd just put everything on XP and screw the dual boot.

If you decide to do the dual boot system, use XP for your recording software. Don't just take my word for it. Look at your own poll results!
