Windows ME, EES Maestro and Pro Audio 9

I've installed Cakewalk Pro audio 9 onto my new Laptop with ME, and an EES Maestro Soundcard. I can record one track just fine. When I record over the track, though, the playback is all out of synch, so that when I play the same thing over the first track, it sounds like a delay effect is on. When I play a lead part, it just sounds completely out of whack.

Is there a way I can configure either my soundcard or Cakewalk Properties to fix this?

laptop soundcards typically suck...they'll call it full duplex if it can function as an answering machine....however, in the last few years it has become possible to buy a pcmcia or usb or other type of external soundcard.
