I bought this computer at a yard sale the other day.It didn't have a cdrom,so I tried throwing one in.When the bios come up during boot,it lists the cdrom amongst the other gibberish, but once windows loads,it only lists the A and C drives(by the way it did have an old tape drive, which I removed).
The computer is an American Computer Innovators, pentium 266,64megpc100 sdram,3gigHD,win95.I don't expect much from it,but I was hoping to put win98 and use it as a midi machine or whatnot. But how to get the cdrom working?

I don't think Win95 supports plug and play, so you will have to manually install it.

Try going into control panel and running the Add New Hardware applet. See if it finds it that way. If not, you should be able to force it by deselecting the "automatically find" option, and manually choosing the CD Rom along with the model.

Also, you might need to have the CD-ROM drivers available on a floppy disk. Depending on the make/model you can probably get them off the mfg's web site.

questions/things to look at

Well, if it is being seen in the BIOS and not in windows there are a couple things to try. First of all, Is the hard drive and cd-rom on the same ide channel? If not, Windows might not see the secondary ide channel for one reason or another (i.e. - irq conflicts...etc). If your pc meets the following criteria, you may want to make sure windows sees the secondary ide channel before trying to install the cd-rom. A shot in the dark, but just in case...
