Which one? Strictly for audio. Are they the same and one just has more bells and whistles or is one more stable than the other? Anybody have any experience with these os?

I am going to dual boot with one of these on a seperate hardrive. I have ME on right now for internet and games, etc. I just have to decide on which one. I haven't used ME with audio yet.

it depends..what audio programs do you actually use? I personally like 2000, but you aren't looking at that, :). I have heard stories about ME and stuff not working. Butr I have heard it works great too. Toss a coin :) or get 2000.

H2H

I've heard mixed results with ME as well. I have tried ME once with less than stellar results. It's a resource pig and has too much excess junk wrapped into the core OS. OTOH, I've read threads from people who have increased performance using ME... I think Windows 98 is more tried tested and stable choice IMO, YMMV.

I have both installed on machines at home (I have 5) but I use 98SE on the two computers I use for audio. Most 98 drivers seem to work for ME but not all. I would think you would get similar performance. I try to keep my audio systems prety "clean" and because of this I almost never have a crash.

Windows 2000 is based on NT, it should be more stable and less crash-prone. There is less driver support for it but that is improving daily.

I would say if your PC is exclusively for audio, and your audio hardware drivers support it, use 2000.
If you also want to play occasional games or other stuff, use 98 or ME.
If you do any playing around with digital video or photography use ME, it has a few new features designed for this.

From everything I've read and heard, Win 2K is the OS of choice for audio (however, driver availability is hit and miss - so make sure you can get drivers for your equipment before plunging).

On the other hand, that said, I'm personally using Win ME and would recommend it to others. Despite all the bashing, I've not had a single problem with it. It has been very stable for me and has better support for WDM drivers. If the choice is strictly between 98 and ME, I would go with ME. Don't, however, do an upgrade. Format your HD and do a clean install, and install only what you need.

Thanks for all the replies guys. My choice is Windows98se with win98 lite. Everything will be compatible with win98 and it will be stripped down so I will have a os strictly for recording.

I have two 98se, and two Windows 2000. I prefer the W2k. I don't notice any "recording/sound" difference on either of the two. One of the w2k boxes I have just upgraded into a Ferrari for Recording. As far as stability goes, you can not beat W2k. Unbelieveable. There are still some companies that do not have drivers for all the hardware, but it is an increadible OS. I have absolutely no use for ME. Wouldn't even put it on an enemies PC. This of course is only MY opinion.........Later
