Windows 7 Latency Question

I will start by saying I've read through loads of forums and websites talking about latency problems, but didn't really find anything that worked for me.

My question:

I recently switched OS from XP to Win7 and have noticed a slight by annoying lag on my recordings. I've installed the latest drivers for my card, combed over my software and the internet for help. When I record to my drum track and then play it back it seems like my rhythm was off, when I zoomed in for a closer look, the wav for the guitar I just did is off beat by 0.046 seconds. I never had this problem with XP and even just tried it on my laptop and it works fine.

Is it just because it's windows 7? I'm thinking about switching back to XP.

Further info: Card is an Audigy 4, and am recording on Cool Edit straight from the line in of the card.

Does cool edit have a setting to automatically adjust for latency? Probably where you set up the input device.

I haven't seen anything that "automatically" adjusts for latency. I've tried adjusting the "Correct for Drift in Recordings" check but it doesn't really do much. I've played with the buffers and every setting I can find and still have the exact same latency. I'm going to try a different recording program to see what happens.

Until then any more ideas? Could it be just the new OS being buggy?

I know cubase has that option. It will calculate the latency and it compensates for it. I think someone here said reaper has that function as well. You should look at reaper , it's free to try and is highly recommended around here.

I had a terrible time with latency issues since I started pc recording. I almost gave it up all together. I now have Win 7 with a Tascam US 144 sound card (Low latency) and discovered that, the combination of Cubase 5 or 6 gives you the options to go in and select the channel out of what ever sound card device you want to use. I just click the box that says, "TASCAM US-144" for the out. All latency issues are gone. I struggled for a year with this and finally found the combination of work-arounds. Go to "Devices" in C-4,5 or 6 >Options sound devices etc.. making sure that you check the option that matches your sound card device. I hope this helps because I know how frustrating this can be.

Cheerz.

I never used to have problems with Cool Edit and latency. I've been using it since early 00's and have had the same audigy 4 card for a long time as well. So I decided to just go back to XP, (yes I'm a hardcore XP user/lover) and when I did the latency problems stopped. Turns out it was a driver issue with Win7. I had looked around for all the latest Win7 drivers for the audigy and nothing worked.

But again when I went back to XP, I tested it without even having to setup the programs settings and BOOM it worked right off the bat. Thanks anyway for replying guys.
