Need more info ...

What is your sound card ?

Do you have any recording software ( i.e. Creative Recorder for Soundblaster ) or are you using Windows Sound Recorder.

Why don't you upgrade your OS? Microsoft doesn't even support that anymore.

Please don't use the built in, generic sound recorder. There are better options available. What are you trying to do?

you need a better sound card.
please post your computer confign in full so we can comment further.

ok what im tring to do is i want to try to record something with the recorder in window.i just want to see if i can record something small before i go buy my new sound card and a recording program.
i have a duron1000mhz,128ram,40gighard disc, sis sound card in the motherboard ,win98 and i have a small cpu mic.

Ok, if I understand correctly, you're trying to do a test record. First you need to make sure that the mic is plugged in the right jack, and plugged in fully. Then, in recording control, make sure that the microphone is either: Unmuted, or selected (depending on the sound card), and make sure the volume is at about half way. Also, if you have a main recording control, put this at half way as well. You shouldn't need to get to advanced if I understand correctly. After you have done this, try recording again. Do you see anything on the audio meter in the recorder when you talk? If you see things on the meter but dont hear anything when you play it back, then the problem is in your speakers or in the playback volume. If you do not see things on the meter then you might have the mic set up wrong, it might be broken, or the recording control isn't set up right.

Let us know what you find out
