Will Vegas do this?

I need software that will allow me to take clips from commercial dvd's and convert them to mpg's to incorporate into power point, and what have you.

Is this an unusual need, or will lots of software do this?

Vegas could do that, but it's much more program than you need for that. An editor like WaveLab or Sound Forge would be a better choice I think.
