Building a new machine, in case you didnt know. Here is a list of whats gonna be inside. Im just looking for nice feedback, you know the kind that says, hell yeah, that sounds great. Of course if there is anything to be concerned about, that would be nice to know too. :)

AMD athlon XP 1800+ w/Thermalright SLK-800 w/Panaflo Medium Flow Ultra Quiet Fan
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe_UAY w/Audio, Dual LAN, AGP 8X, SATA, Firewire, USB2.0
Micron original 256 MB PC-2700 DDR
Atx Supercase 115 with Front USB (cheapo special)
Enermax 350w Whisper Dual Fanw/ Fan Control
40 G WD HD 7200 RPM
m-audio Delta 66

I am building this setup, while keeping in mind being able to upgrade it in the future, ie processor specifically, and more ram. As well when it comes to mobo's I choose this one over it's counterpart and bare bones minimum board, the ASUS A7V8X, for a couple of reasons. One its the deluxe board, meaning it has more stuff, so if ever I want to unload this when I get a MAC, itll be far more user friendly I think. As well I do believe the two have different chipsets, the A7N8X comes with nVidia chiper's, while the A7V8X comes the the ever dreaded VIA chips. Of course worry over chipset is probably outdated at best, from what I can gather, at least this way I cant blame the chipmakers eh.

Sounds fine, but bump yourself up to 512MB of the PC2700 http://www.crucial.com, and replace that 40GB WD hard drive with 2 maxtor 40GB liquid bearing drives (about $70 each) and you'll have yourself a winner.

actually yes I forgot too put in that there is 2 sticks of 256 RAM, and as for the harddrive...well :D, i bought it sunday, it was on sale for 100$ canadian, which is at least 20$ canadian better than the best prices on the net (newegg.com etc etc). Thanks for the prompt response.

100CAN? That's like $5 USD right? :)

I would still look into getting a second hard drive...makes life a lot nicer!

Also, have you thought about your CDROM, CD burner, floppy drive (yeah it's still a good idea to have one), mouse, keyboard, etc etc?

does anyone here use RAID controllers in thier DAW's- either for backing up or for stripping?- Slackmaster mentioned 2 drives- would you use a RAID controller or just use one as the regular c: and the other strictly for storing audio?- just curious

5 maybe 6 USD $

yea, so why is it we pay more taxes???:)

As far as the rest of it goes, I will be broke shortly after his purchase :D, but for now I do have an extra keyboard and mouse laying around. Whats really funny is I may end up doing double duty with this monitor for a little while :D.

Seriously though, Ill probably cannibalize the roms out of this crappy machine for the time being, and I guess I should really get a floppy. :D.

I am definately going to have a second hard drive added in the future, but uhh those damn canadian dollars are preventing me from doing so right now. Do you know that after looking up prices on 3 components (processor, mobo, and RAM as stated above), online at american sites I can knock at least 150$ off the total. Without shipping costs and the grief that comes with shipping that is. This last area here is the reason of which Im probably going to buy my parts right here in Cowtown. As well, the place Im looking to buy has some nice warranty deals. Its not set in stone yet but think im gonna buy Canadian :D.

I prefer the 8 mb cache western digital drives myself, and one drive is usually fine with a modern computer.

heehee

I fluked out I think, I never even looked at the 8 mb cache thing when I went and bought it, luckily enough it does :D

The reason I recommend two drives has nothing to do with the age of the computer, nor RAID. It can just make life easier in a lot of ways. If one drive starts to fail you have the other to recover data to in a pinch. You can also use the second drive to make quick backups of your audio projects when you don't have the time to make CDR's (which can be a big pain on a large project). If you want to take all of your tracks to another studio you can just *carefully* whip your audio drive out and take it with you, without rendering your system completely useless. I would much rather have two 40GB drives than one 80GB drive in two partitions....and I think that 80GB is the minimum size you want these days. But for now you're set, don't worry about it.

3 drives ?:D

I agree. I would rather have more than one drive, specifically for the purpose of backing up. The removing of a drive to take somewhere never really occured to me, thanks for pointing that out.

The reason I put up there, 3 drives...is, Im wondering if it isnt better to put an OS all by itself on a small hd like 10 gig, or maybe 20 gig is better. Then use the other two drives as you mentioned. Of course this isnt going to happen for me anytime soon, but it is something I am considering for the future obviously.
;)
