Will this cpu/mem handle it?

Hi,

I've been using cubase LE on my laptop, but would like to set it up with my desktop instead. I have a P III 700Mhz with 256 RAM. Obviously the USB spec is 1.1, but my interface (us-122) will supposedly tolerate that. Any idea if this will cut it for audio recording?

Thanks,

JD

I've got a US122 plugged into a 750MHz Duron, 1GB RAM running Cubase. I'm not doing anything huge but it seems fine. You really ought to get as much RAM as you can.

I second the recommendation for more ram.

...but then again, i used to track on a P2 with 64 megs of ram in cool edit years ago, so I'm sure that you'll manage as long as you keep your tracks and system-hogging vst effects to a minimum.

Yah, unfortunately my slots are all filled, and PC100 RAM is really expensive. I wish this took 133, but Dell's mainboards on their XPS-T series from that vintage are finicky and insist on PC100. It would cost $160 to get 512 Megs - that's almost halfway to a brand new whole Dell system with a 15" flat screen!

Mmmmmm flat screen.....

I only have 256 of Ram but my processor is an athlon 2000. I also have a US122 and Cubase LE. I have never had a problem. I have songs with up to 10 tracks playing at once and it's fine. I am going to get some more ram though.

I'd save up for a new unit. PIII's are not very efficient for recording audio and limiting on the number of tracks and effects you can run.

Ok then, so on that note....

Ok, what is the best processor for audio apps? I've read numerous posts about people having problems with hyper-threading P4s. How are the cheap AMD semprons, anyone know? My main desktop is an Athlon, which I could transplant into a quieter case, I suppose for recording. I'd prefer to build a dedicated system for cheap OR pick up one of Dells deals if that will work.

This seems like a good deal but it's a Celeron 2.4 (how do those do?).
Dell Celeron 2.4 with 512 Mb and 80 Gb ATA/100 drive with Windows XP home all for $319 delivered. I can canibalize a monitor and a CD burner from my PIII machine. The OS alone costs what, $100?

Thanks,

JD

I've done all my recording so far using a Duron based machine and if I put another one together I'll use AMD again because I like underdogs.

Yah, I'm quite fond of this athlon 2500 desktopthat I put together last year. My laptop that I'm recording on is a Pentium M 1.3, and it does fine. I haven't run any audio on the AMD product, however. To bad Dell doesn't use AMD processors in their super cheap combos. I guess they're just Intel pimps.

The key would seem to be finding a motherboard that will tolerate almost any kind of memory. RAM is really cheap now, but it's a matter of getting a Mobo that will take the super duper cheap stuff.

i'll second the importance of an appropriate motherboard.. when i upgraded from 512 PC3200 to 1 gig i found out that my mobo only supports 1 stick of PC3200, so i had to add a second 512 of PC2700 which was kind of a letdown.

so yeah, do your homework before you buy. lastly, i have a +2500 athlon as well and i'm very happy with it.

A couple of months ago I got a gig of 133 off ebay for $50, and sold my old 128s for about half.
