will this comp be good for pro tools

im just starting out so i dont know alot, but i would be recording full bands, and i kind of want just what i need to get started ya know. i know a mac pro would prob be best but if i buy a mac pro then i really cant afford the mics and the software etc..until way down the road. im looking at an imac, i know i would need to upgrade the 1gb memory to at least 2, but what do you guys think. would this comp run pro tools well, what do i need more/less of etc...?
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
250GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory

Looks fine to me - except you probably want to run 2 separate hard drives, on for all system stuff and one purely for running audio off. Make sure you get the fastest hard drive you can afford. Also, adding an extra 1gb RAM wouldn't hurt either, although it's not essential.

It will be fine. I have the same setup but with 2 GB of ram and a 500GB external firewire drive to record to. The iMac does suprisingly well running PT 7.4
 
I run PT 7.4 on an early 2007, 2.33Ghz iMac (3 GB RAM) and am totally happy with it. Definitely get an external FW drive and I would recommend additional memory, I picked up after market memory for a fraction of the cost of apple gear.
 
I don't know if they're still up, but the mac store had some sick deals on newer imacs that they're trying to get rid of before upgrading the line.

I would be very frightened to try and get PT up and running on a pc. You have to take EVERY component into careful consideration. ESPECIALLY the motherboard.

I would check the digidesign site and see what motherboards are in the recommended systems. I'd even email them and post on the DUC to make sure.

If you do go mac, try and get them to put tiger on it rather than leopard, as they haven't updated LE for leopard yet.
 
i bought a Rhino Jr external hard drive, I was told it was really good
 
so leopard wont work with pro tools or what? whats the difference? also, whats the big diff between the digi 002 and digi 003. i saw the digi 003 factory comes with some extra plugins for a few hundred more dollars, is it worth it? whats the main diff with the diff versions of pro tools? i have about 2 months before i can get anything so im trying to do as much research as i can before then. thanks for the help guys.
 
Digidesign hasn't certified PTLE for leopard yet. Actually, the only thing that they have certified is HD on leopard, but only if you're running an 8 core mac pro.

What I've seen from people running PT on leopard runs the gambit from no problems at all, to occasional hiccups, to missing menu items, to not launching, to grey screen of death when launching.
 
As far as the 002 vs 003, the differences are largely cosmetic, although apparently the 003 has a more accurate internal clock. I'm not sure but I think the 003 has different pre's than the 002, but the difference would probably be subjective as to which one is "better" than the other as far as pre's.

There's also a second headphone output to which you can generate a 2nd headphone mix, and wordclock i/o.

both of which, in my opinion, aren't major upgrades. The 002 can also be bought with the Factory Bundle which provides you with the extra plugs. Personally, i'd go for a 002 as you should be able to get'em cheaper than a 003.
