Will Sonar 1.31 work in Win XP?

I am upgrading. It has been a real pain going from Win ME to Win XP. Has anybody had any problems running Sonar 1.31 under Win XP?

I'm still running Win ME myself :) , but the general consensus on the Sonar Newsgroup is that Win XP and Win 2000 are the preferred OS's for Sonar.

If you didn't do a clean install, I might recommend you consider that. My past experiences with Windows are that clean installs perform much better.

UMMMM....yes. It was designed for it.

I've used SONAR on both 98 and XP. SONAR runs much better in the XP, and the WDM drivers are a wonderful thing.

Confirm 1.31 works great in xp but the creative wdm drivers are crap!

Get Sonar 2.0 XP if u can its over twice as good

Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. I will stick with 1.31 for now. It works great and trouble free. I will wait for Sonar 3 until my next upgrade. Sonar 2's extra features are good, but not needed for me.

Let me add sumthing here... since Sonar needs more power, it takes more your PC resource. Then be sure to install it on the powerfull machine too. My experience, XP just relatively the best OS for Sonar. Never got 'em hang on the road. Creative WDM driver is suck, but Microsoft's one works better.

I'm buying the Tascam US-224.

I had lots of problems with SB Live. So I use Live Synth Pro for playing SoundFonts. The Roland VSC3 soft synth is my default synth and it sounds professional and doesn't crash like the Live Synth always did.

My new system is a 1.6GHz P4. I am replacing my Wave 824 with a new Tascam US-224. It has the features I really need, and its portable since it is USB based, no nasty PCI cards to deal with.

So, is the consensus that XP works fine and stable, but that Win2K is still the OS of choice for Sonar? I emailed Cakewalk to ask, but that was early this AM and havent heard yet. I want Win2K's stability, but I would rather have XP when it comes down to it now. WHichever is better is where I am going.
Just bought a new case with PS, an Epox ep8kh+ mobo and 256mb of DDR, I'll order the rest friday... cant wait... finally happening...

XP. Definately..

And dont worry about the clean install thing. XP upgrades just fine.

There is no stability difference between XP and 2000. The only issue with XP is driver availability. If you can get XP drivers for all your stuff, then, by all means, go with XP. Since you seem to be ordering all new equipment, this shouldn't be an issue.

One recommendation I have seen quite frequently is to install XP with ACPI disabled. Apparently this is a little tricky, but should be done when installing rather than later. It requires toggling a function key (F6?) at a certain point during the installation. Sorry, but I don't have the specific details. Maybe someone else can help here.

My understanding is that if this is not done, XP will load all PCI devices on a single IRQ. This could create problems for you.

Sorry for the vagueness, but I'm passing along second hand information here. However, the sources (Sonar Newsgroup) have proven to be pretty reliable in the past.

Great link, acidman. Exactly what I was talking about. (However I blew it with the F6 key, turns out to be the F5. Who knew :) )

Interesting site, some of the stuff they recomend are really only neccesary on a slow machine. I have an 1800xp athlon and I can record 8 tracks of 96k 24 bit data with no problems, even with all the bells and whistles turned on.

Also, the ACPI stuff greatly depends on the motherboard. My board, I was able to get every thing on a sperate IRQ without any problems. I also did an upgrade install, and then later switched motherboards and chipsets(dont try this at home kids), and XP caught everything just fine and is running stable, except when i really screw with it. Since a big part of my job is screwing with new tech, and finding problems, my system takes quite a beating, and XP has held up admirably.

For those of you who cant or dont want to upgrade from Win 98SE..In my new system..98SE is out performing Win 2K!

THe system is P4 1.6
Intel 850MV
1.024 gb RAMBUS
52x CDROM
tdk VELO CDRW
mAXTOR hd 40G 7200...Partitioned in half..Win 98SE on the first and Win 2k on the rest
18.3 Maxtor 10000RPM SCSI HD (main audio) formatted w/ Z64
18.4 Seagate 10000RPM SCSI HD (backup and future attempt to run software raid under Win 2k or XP)
Adaptec SCSI 19150 controller card
Motu 2408 mkII audio system
Delta 1010 audio system

The only real problem that I had with Win 98SE is that it would occasionally crash ,this being using the old system. Maybe its the additional horsepower, but I have not had a single crash with 98. Also, Win 98 requires less CPU power to do the same thing in Sonar. I checked this by running the same project in both OS,s under Win 2k the cpu usage was almost double that being used in Win 98. Even running the benchmark tests utilizing the Sisoft Sandra utilities Im getting better figures for Ram usage and HD performance under win 98. In Win 2k im getting occasional pops and crackles while streaming 24 bit audio and this is with both audio cards..even after disabling everything that didnt need to run, USB, parallel ports the sound card not being used. And on top of all of that, Microsoft it appears, will not be providing any support for Win2k except maybe the server addition. I have not disabled ACPI in Win2k but I havnt diabled it in Win 98 either. It may make a difference but as long as 98SE keeps doing what its doing i may not need to find out. My point is this...had I known that 98 could perform this well with my current equipment..I wouldnt have felt the need to get the latest OS..Sonar 2.0 is running absolutely superb in Win 98 and I didnt have a single install problem under Win 2k..

If youre buying a new PC there really wont be a decision to make youre gonna get XP and ultimately you will get it to work for audio and undoubtedly XP is gonna be better a year from now..but if youre building from scratch and still got old Win 98SE laying about you may want to give it a shot..you may find a pleasant surprise!

I assume you are not running WDM drivers for your soundcards. Also, what latency are you getting?

You must be real lucky if you're getting WDM drivers to work with Win 98 on your system, but I certainly wouldn't recormmend it for other people.
