Will someone please explain this like I am a particularly tech savvy 7 year old.

Pleaseandthankyou

I am having difficulty getting AbletonL9 to recognize my microKorg XL. It is connected via midi to a ProFire 610. Running OSX 10.7. Are more details needed? Feeling defeated. Noob status 11/10 apparently. Sigh.

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered somewhere I missed...:confused:

Hi,
There'll be other people around here who can give you ableton-specific advice, but I just wanted to let you know,
Ableton will never 'recognise' a midi device by name.

Midi is data and a device with midi inputs is designed to receive data on one (or all) of it's channels.
IIRC, a single midi input has 16 channels.
By default, software is usually set to receive on omni (all channels) unless you tell it otherwise.

The only thing that you would need to set up is just making sure that ableton knows to use the midi input port on your profire.

This is probably the current and default setting, but if you have problems I'm sure that option is available somewhere in your ableton settings.

Other than that, just make sure there's a midi track set to receive on all channels and plug in your keyboard.

Hope that's useful.

Once upon a time in the far off land of recordingville .....

Oh wait - follow what Steenamaroo said.

Okay. Thanks for responding. I'm pretty confident I understand the concept you laid out. So if I wanted to record audio with my synths presets, I should use the 1/4" option rather than midi, ya? I would then be recording on an audio track rather than midi. Mhmm?
Edit: Whereas with midi I would be using my DAWs synth sounds etc? Am I grasping the core concept?

Yeah, that's it.
The basic rule is:
If you want to record the sound that your synth or keyboard makes, use a mic or line.
If you want to use your synth or keyboard to trigger synthetic sounds from your computer (or other hardware), use midi.

It's pretty much sheet music for computers.
