Will my laptop be able to hack it?

I am about to purchase a Tascam USB-122. It comes with Cubasis, but I might use n-tracks instead. The question is whether my laptop will actually be able to perform adequately. I have a Toshiba Satellite with 10 Gigs of memory and a 600 MHz Celeron processor. I also have a Dell DJ Mp3 player with 15 Gigs of memory that might be able to assist with data storage. So, does the learned forum believe that I am wasting my money on soundcard etc. with a computer such as mine?

Thanks,

Rob

hmmm well take my advice with a grain of salt as i am really not sure, there are others that can give you a more accurate answer (brazillian?). But, i'm gonna have to say that's definately pushing it. How much RAM do you have? i have a Us122 with a toshiba satelite as well. My satelite is a bit more powerful though. i have a 1.8 Gzh with 512 RAM. It works well with my comp but is has given me the occasional hick-up. If you are using a lot of tracks and effects i'm gonna have to say no for sure but your computer may be able to handle a couple of tracks with an effect or two.

Depending on your desires as far as track counts and effects processing, you are going to be limited with that laptop.
If you are just getting started in recording and don't have the resources to invest in a more robust computer. I would opt for an inexpensive soundcard option, so you can at least get into the world of computer recording and hone your skills. It is unfortunate that the lesser powerful laptops don't always play nicely with DAW use and the limitation of 1 hard drive only compounds this limitation. If the laptop is USB2.0 you are in better shape. As far as the mp3 player being used for the dedicated Audio data streaming drive ... I kinda have my doubts, yet if again the laptop and the mp3 player are USB2.0 the prospect looks better.
My honest opinion would be to not invest a great deal of money into the laptop that you currently have, but I wouldn't dismiss making minimal investments to see how far you can go with it. In most cases, any hardware and software you do buy ... will be able to be used on a more robust machine in the future.

How much RAM? What OS?

The original Celerons (under 1Ghz) were terrible processors and did indeed have the extra FPU circuitry disabled.

Any program written in the last 3 years or so will not work well with that system.

I'm having a hard time even believing it would have a USB port. Does it?
