Hi gang, please excuse me if this is the wrong forum for a message of this kind
but I figured the "mixing" forum would be appropriate . . .

My name is Pete Weaver, I have been an audio engineer based
out of the Pacific Northwest for years, working with artists on a
local / regional level. I am looking to branch out and take on work
beyond the local area. I have years experience in digital and analog
environments. I am currently running a Pro Tools rig. The last album
that I mixed got solid airplay on 112 radio stations across the US
and Canada. (not that it's any big deal . . . just giving some info)

I am willing to offer my service and studio as a mix engineer and
will mix one song for any artist, free of charge, absolutely no obligation.
When the mix is finished, I'll send it to you and if you want, I am happy
to make any changes needed. Keep the mix and
use it on your album . . . or not . . . do with it as you like.
All I need is a dvd of your song in a Pro Tools session.

If you liked the mix enough, perhaps we can arrange to mix the rest
of the album . . .
either way you keep the mix I've done and use it any way you
wish. I am working to etablish a name for myself
beyond a local level. I am also very interested in taking
overflow work from other studios as well, in Pro Tools editing or mixing.

For a quick example of some of my work, check these links:

Also, my system is a home studio running Pro Tools, I'll be happy to discuss
any aspects of the mixes at these links.

Please contact me at anytime! . . . band@halftheworld.cc

I agree. What's your motivation here? I don't want to sound like a total skeptic, but it's rare to see someone offer something for nothing. What's the catch? Or are you just trying to drum up some business? If it's the latter, I'm pretty sure that your post would be considered spam.

I don't really need anything mixed right now ... thanks.

Do you do anything else, free? I could use some help with my taxes. My place is a mess. Think you could come by and tidy it up a bit? If I like your work, I might even let you cook me dinner.

Seems straightforward to me...

posted his name and links to his work.

Definitely spam.

ProTools only? No DP4 or others?

I don't use ProTools, but I'd be glad to send you something to see what you do. I'm supprised that all the others think you're up to something "fishy." I thought you expressed your goals very clearly. If I remember, in one of the MP3 mix contests, one of the judges offered to do THE SAME THING for the winner of the contest. Maybe that's different though because you don't have credibility with a zillion posts, and posting a lot on the internet makes you credible

Maybe post this in the mic forum instead. There are certain exceptions for "spam" over there ;)

all I have is wavs

That shouldn't be a problem for a protools guy. The mix engineer on the project I just finished up didn't have any problem at all importing the .wavs into protools and setting them up. Didn't take long at all.

To be honest I think this offer is quite nice. Allthough I could imagine that if he manages to create a great mix for me for one song I'd like either to know how he did it or to have more (all) songs mixed by him. Of course this could be a 'on the hour job' to finish it up and most likely he'll never be willing or . Maybe it is comparable with the offer some (all?) mastering houses offer: mastering one song for free to see if you like the results. Sounds ok to me. Allthough for a first post it is a bit harsh.. spending a week on the baord to find out how people would feel about an offer like this would be 'smoother' I guess..

Still I wonder what he'd would do with the crap I've recorded.. wav's only of course..

I don't know why the guy is coming here, of all places, to pimp.

Doesn't he know ... everyone at HR.com is flat broke? :D

This isn't spam. It's charity.

Well I don't take exception to it personally but others seem to and moreover I think with the forum rules in mind it would be regarded as spam.

As much as anyone might hate spam not everyone is au fait with netiquette so why not give the guy a break and be polite?

It all sounds good and full but the stereo separation was way overdone and got tiring after awhile. Keep in mind I was listening through cans but the problem was consistent throughout all the recordings. It was like the drums were dead center in front but the guitars were panned hard left and right and sounded not only way to the sides but almost behind me ears. I like to hear the band in front of me.

As you can see it's not a good idea to just sign on and spam your first post. Stick around awhile and help out on the boards some and you'll be much more appreciated. Welcome to the BBS.

While the offer to mix a free track was nice, but I would consider this SPAM. It is his first post (Not that you need millions of them to be credible), but it appears he just posted to publicize, and has not even responded to any of the comments about his post. Probably because he doesn't care, he just wants business.

He hasn't realized, that despite some of the talk here, there is still a level of respect for each other, and helping each other along, not trying to take business away from anyone else around here.

Hmm ... maybe you could work out a deal with him to make you a mono mix for free. I'm sure he'd be up for it.

Hey gang . . .

Valid comments from all . . .

As far as not responding . . . I only posted my offer last night (thursday) about
6:00 p.m. and then walked out the door for a rehearsal . . . it's now a little
past noon the next day so i got back to my pc as quick as i could.

You are absolutely correct, this was my first post . . . guilty as charged.

As far as being SPAM . . . that depends . . . my offer is certainly legit and
may be helpful to any interested parties. I gain nothing from it but the chance
to work with other artists outside my regional area. Unless, they like the work
I've done and wish to hire me to mix the rest of an album, which of course
would be very nice and desired. Which is why I'm offering to mix "one" song
for free from any given artist unless I got swamped with mixes and couldn't get
to them all and had to withdraw my offer! :)
I'll also say this is not the only board I have posted this offer to . . so we'll
see what comes of it.
Either way my offer stands for those interested and if this is
seen as SPAM I apologize and will gladly post it to a more appropriate
room / forum. But I figured the mix room would be interested in hearing this.

Concerning stereo separation being too wide . . . I'm with you on this, but I
think it really comes down to a "flavor" thing . . . I tend to like that big wide
sound that makes the song seem like it's coming from wider than the speakers
themselves . . . a bigger soundstage . . . particularly with distorted double
tracked guitars . . . but I know alot of engineers like to
go for much more centered almost mono focus in their mixes . . . which can be
helpful for radio . . . I can see merit in both approaches.

As far as this forum . . . I'm glad to be on board and plan on hanging out in the
future.

As far as being "fishy" . . . I do love seafood, but I promise I haven't eaten
any in at least three days! ;)

and that is why most recording studios don't pay decent wages to their engineers... there is an over abundance of people willing to work for nothing, or next to nothing, just to get their foot in the door of a studio and be able to twiddle knobs on equipment they themselves couldn't afford. Personally, I have seen those situations where some "joe" was willing to fetch coffee and work for free, but had the talant of a piece of granite....then usually up-surping the guy that had the abilities and experience.

Well if anyone is silly enough to send off recordings to a complete stranger without first copyrighting them and maybe even signing a contract to retain free use of the mixed recording....

Anyway i think your stuff sounds really good. Who recorded them? Everything is real clear. You got the drums sounding really good as they cut through clear but dont overpower the song. Not totally sure about the guitar break down on wasting away though (mixing wise). Did you fix some kik and snare hits with samples of the best hits atall?
Hope this aint just a way of promoting the band.

This seems like a cool move if you are willing to send my man your music. If someone is willing to give you a free mixdown, and all he's trying trying to do is network and possibly get some additional work, I personally don't see any harm in dudes approach. I think it's a good way to connect with others with the possiblity of collaborating and maybe make a buck, and the fact that he is offering a service at no cost is showing he's willing to give to receive and you can't knock that at all.

I don't want to piss and moan about this whole thing, and I don't have a huge issue with it, however I thought this forum was to help each other develop our recording abilities (I'm not saying him advertising is hindering that, just not what I thought the purpose of this forum was), not for advertising ourselves.

What would happen if every member started to start threads just to advertise themselves.
