Will I need a amp for this?

I've been messing around with recording to my PC to get some simple stuff down. I use a pair of Sony MDR-7506's for monitoring and for the minimal mixing that I do. I still want to use my PC speakers for other things though, so right now I get stuck crawling under my desk every time I want to record something to switch the headphones out with the speakers. If I but a Y-splitter for 1/8in plugs at radio shack, will the sound card be able to handle both at the same time or will I need an amp for the headphones? I noticed with a portable CD player I had, the volume noticeably decreased when I split the signal to two sets of headphones.

Thanks,

Get an extention cable that runs from the back of your PC to the top of your desk someplace. That should make switching between phones and speakers easier.

I once made a switchbox for this purpose...it was really ugly and weird looking but it worked. I would recommending putting that much effort into it :)

You're going to want a real monitoring system here pretty soon though man :(

Thanks. I was just wondering if the sound card had enough power to run both at the same time. Im looking into a Delta 44 card, one of those Dynaudio/Hafler monitor packages and a decent mixer. I have no idea what mixer I want to get.

I'm definately getting the monitors first, only because I can use them with my 424 while I'm saving for the mixer and IO card.
