I plug my guitar in to the mic line in on my laptop, and get reasonable results. Would buying a usb souncard really improve the sound much?

You shouldn't really be plugging your guitar straight into the line in of your laptop anyway. A guitar is not a line level instrument. You will benefet from a DI box, which basically converts the guitar's level to line level suitable for your laptop's soundcard.

The "built-in" soundcard chip costs about 25cents and is made for beeps, boops and occasional gaming.

This type of upgrade will probably be one of the last times you will have the opportunity to get your "socks knocked off" or your "jaw dropped" by a recording equipment purchase. After that, it's a grimmy game of inches where you spend thousands of dollars for small, hard-fought gains on the audio quality landscape. Make the purchase and enjoy the relative peace and quiet before the gear aquisition storm begins in earnest!

I use the ESI Juli@...Love it , amazing card. A lot of the consumer soundcards are not bit perfect, resample, etc...Before I had the Juli@, I owned an M-Audio 24/96, and it is bit perfect. I suggest the Juli@ OR if you want to spend more money, the EMU or Lynx http://www.lynxstudio.com/reviews/LynxTWO Sound On Sound Review Web.pdf
