Just a Home Recorder
Just a quick question for someone to touch on.

Will a 3ghz Celeron processor out perform a 1.8ghz P4 or a 2.4GHZ AMD?
Ofcourse it would be for audio recording.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Not really, Celeron is a fancey way of saying pentium II. though theyre slightly faster than the PII theyre slower than a PIII for processing power and performance.

actually, a 3.0 Ghz celeron is exactly 1.2 GHz "faster" than a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz...

they just aren't as powerful.. they're low L2 Cache size of 256k is a huge bottleneck.

If you're in the market for a new pc for recording , you'll want to look at clock speed, L2 cache size (preferably 1Mb or more) , bus speed (preferably 800mhz, 533 is "ok") and Ram speed.. Depending on what the mother board supports, ddr pc3200 should be what you get (if you're getting an older pc)

if you're going to get 2 gigs of ram.. dont just get 2 1gig sticks and slap em in 2 of the available 4 slots... do some research, if you get 4 512mb sticks with tight timings, these will perform much better than 2 1 gig sticks with relaxed timings..

its all in how its built dood.. just do some research, or shoot me some pm's and ill try and help you out.. dont believe what everyone tells ya..clock speed isnt everything

Well I have Built quite a Few systems useing the New Prescot Celeron Chips with the 256kb of L2 Cache (Which is twice the cache of any other Celeron CPU ever made) and they aren"t too bad and "YES" a 3.0ghz Celeron will outperform a 1.8ghz P-4 as Many of the Older P-4"s (Willemet core) only had 256kb of L2 Cache anyways and only had a 400mhz Buss speed and the new Celeron D"s have a 533mhz Buss speed.....

I would still suggest that you spend a couple extra Bucks and Maybe try getting a Athlon 64 set up as you can get them in the 754 Package for quite cheap these days....

My Recording PC only has a Celeron D 2.6ghz and I have absolutly no problems Tracking 16 + tracks with Plugins so you should have no problem with a 3.0ghz as long as you have enough Ram (512mb to 1.0gb)....

Cheers

thanks for all the replies,

I am looking to build a PC for just audio, my 2 pc's now are kinda "multi purpose" with more than 1 person using them (I can't stand when someone F's with my settings especially in the sounds and audio menu) but I haven't been in the market for a pc for a few years now and haven't kept up with the newer processors such as the Celerons and AMD 64s etc...

I figure it's better to build a new PC that will be more expandable than some of the lower end dell cpus that aren't as expandable. I was consedering a processor, mother board package I saw for 300 which had a 3ghz Celeron D processor, but if it wont be a major difference compared to my 1.8 p4 I might just hold off and save up for a better board and processor.

Anyone have any reccomendations for boards and processors, pref. $500 and under for both?

I wouldn't build a Celeron based machine on a bet. Every Celeron I've seen for years and years, leaves a lot to be desired in performance.

They are cheap. That is why they are used.

Ditto the recommendation for the Athlon/64. I recently did a gaming machine for a client, based on the Athlon/64. Combined with Corsair XMS matched memory pairs on an nForce board, it performs admirably.

Build your recording station for dedicated use. Find the XP Tweaks document on the net, and use it to to trim the fat from off-the-shelf XP installations. There is a whole lot of cpu cycles to be gained from dropping the lard and eye candy.
