Wierd shaped room needs planning

Now it's kind of my turn. The top floor of our house is an insulated attic, which now will be converted to several rooms.

Attached is an idea for construction. None of the inner walls are built and the only real limits are the chimeny and the stairs. The bathroom is not built but my girlfriend really wants it that large. However, she can be convinced to compromise. The red, dashed line shows the room from the side. So, if you were to stand the red shapes up, you would get a 3D model of this rather oddly shaped room. I wanted to make a 3D model but Smartdraw wouldn't let and my super-pro office design cannot do tilted ceelings...and $600-1000 for a good design SW was a bit too much.

I'm recording mainly (only) acoustic music and usually "all at once" so I want a good sounding room while sound isolation is less of a problem. It's dead silent up on the attic so there will be no need for floating wall etc.

The worst/best part is the cathredal ceeling 3,5m (12') high but i limits the placement of the room as I want it cymmetrical.

Also, we want to use the room as TV/living room but we havent decided yet. We have a big living room on the bottom floor but it doesn't have that nice high ceeling...

Finally, if possible. I wan't the control room and studio to be one large room. Two reasons: I wan't a big room with natural reverb and if we're going to use it as a TV room, we want that luxurious space and volume. Mmm, nice.

My main problem is the lack of limits. I cannot decide on one plan.

Uhm, tired and confusing. Off to bed. More plans and the Smartdraw originals will be posted on Monday when I can access the web servers at work.

Cheers

Oh one more thing. The meassure unit on the drawing is millimeters. Divide by 25.4 to get inches or 304,8 for feet.

Here's a picture of my house. The windows by the balcony are the ones mentioned on the drawing. It gives you an idea (or not) of the shape of the area where I put the sofa and table.

I took the liberty to paint in the lawn, which wasn't there at the time the picture was taken:)

Looks good.

But <G>.

I'd reverse the console room, so that you aren't engineering next to the stairs. THis way you can easily see into the two rooms on either side if you put glass in, and not have a railing obstructing your view. Just turn the entire center section 180 degrees.

Also, you have drawn parallel walls!

If you can, try to angle at least one wall 15 degrees. Usually the end walls at the left/right of your diagram would be easier to angle in such a fashion.

Others may or may not agree, but usually in rooms with slanted ceilings (like attics) one wall being off keil result in decent acoustics.

Hope I helped

Here's a new draft. I widened the room a bit. ans added a folding wall to break up the reflected surface that the wondows make up. The couch and chairs will be in the centre of the room when I'm not recording.

Frederic, Thanks for your suggestions and I would have agreed with you, if it wasn't for the detail that I forgot to mention, I will be recording and tracking in the same room. So, the side rooms will be two bedrooms and a bathroom. I plan on just placing the musicians more or less in the middle of the room, facing the console and placing a stereo pair of mics in front of them. I wan't a large room with natural reverb as I (basically) only record acoustic music. Otherwise, you suggestion of the 180 rotation would have been perfect.

Should I scrap the plans on flush-mounting the monitors? Is it really worth the effort?

Can you have the bathroom on the other side of the stairs??

cheers
john

Nope, that the worst thing. The plumbing is prepared in that corner.

I hope your woman doesn't wanna use the water closet while your tracking!

Why do I hear tinkling on the guitar track? mmmnn the strings are new, maybe its imagination.

Peace,
Dennis

If you can flushmount your speakers it's a great advantage.

try this out??

cheers

No can do John.

It is probably the best way to lay out the studio if I was to be using the entire top floor (minus the bathroom) but I will only be using the centre for the studio. And we'll be using that room as second living room as well so we want it at least a bit symetrical:)

So basically, what we have to work with is what I lined out in studio_2.jpg. What can be done to improve that design?

The room called "studio 1" in John's design will most likely be a hobby room so if that can be combined with a control room, it should work. I think it'll be too small though. Then I could use the centre room as a studio and the small room as control room but it will be a tiny control room, which will be sharing space with other hobbies like wood working... sounds like a bad plan, doesn't it?

John, can you mail me your Smart Draw files? ola.franzen@goyada.com

Thanks

Here's a new idea. Anything to continue working with or should I scrap it?

(Think you forgot a door in between the stairs and the main studio room?? Or are you planning to use a ladder and enter via the balcony? ;) )

I was actually planning on climbing up the chimney, wise guy.

Apart from the fact that there’s no decent way to access the room, do you think it could work?

I think putting the control part in the middle would take alot of place... Never looked into studio planning. Just took it up from this post. (Still looking very much into the basics, as where to put doors. :p )

Actually, they all look quite good to me...

Anyhow, that idea with your control room in the middle is a good trick to taking a space from your GF's big bathroom... ;)

Do you think I'll have too much problems with back reflections with this design?
