I have a number of various ribbon mics, including Shure 330/333/SM33, Shure 300, Beyer M500, Beyer M160, Beyer M260, and 3 AEAs.
The AEA R84 is the greatest for solo, recording AND live. The sound is rich and detailed, even two feet away. It's also great for Blumlein-configuration recording of ensembles.
The AEA R44CNE I don't use much, but it's a GREAT microphone. If you want a mic which will capture a whole group of people in a big room - and I mean capture EVERYTHING that's within its polar pattern - it's the one. Also great for crooners, with its prodigious proximity effect.
