Why would you need such a big console?

Can someone explain to me the real reason behind these huge consoles? I dont understand the need for them especially at a home studio.

What are the benefits of a bigger console?

Thanks
Dave

A large mixing console makes the perfect spot for a guest bedroom under which, one can take cat naps during those long, SRV tribute sessions.

They also double as a handy spot to dry one's underwear on and to spread large maps of your town's beer and liquor stores. :)

What did you think they were for?

Cheers! :)

if you're recording lots of tracks and/or using lots of effects.

snare top
snare btm
high hat top
high hat btm
tom 1
tom 2
tom 3
over head Left
over head right
kick drum out
kick drum in
room mic

there's 12 right there for an average drum setup. Using more drums, you'll need more mics and more channels.
Then you go onto the other instruments
gtr1 mic 1
gtr1 mic 2
gtr1 DI
gtr2 mic 1
gtr2 mic 2
gtr2 DI
bass DI
bass amp
solo guitar
keyboard
lead vocals
bg vox1
bg vox2

And this can be all for a typical rock band. If you get into an orchestra, jazz band, or larger more complex band of some sort, you'll get more channels

Then you can go onto using effects for all these channels. And if you're running a console as your sole mixer, you'll probably be returning these to open audio tracks.
Or if you're using the console for a larger project like say, a movie...each individual sound can get it's own channel.

Of course, this is more common in the professional world. For home projects, you'll rarely see large consoles...especially if you plan to mix all inside the box.

Impressing the chicks. That's what its all about.

In a home studio this rather defeats the purpose if the large board in the bedroom means you have a bed so small two peope can't be in it at the same time...

Other than that, Benny is right on. They are also handy for doing all kinds of mixing tricks. The more channels you have the more you can do.

Take care,
Chris

If they have lots of blinkies...I like. I likes me the blinkies.... :D

Making yourself feel special and that you've accomplished something.

Or maybe to record a bunch of different tracks at the same time.

I could sell my house and get one, but then where would I put it?

You'll never have to heat that room in your house - the savings will be astronomical!!!

lol you guys are funny.. :p
You'll find big, big consoles for broadcasts stations. Then, they would set a set of channels per radio spot, tv show, movie, whatever it is, and another spot on another set of channels. It would be ideal, and practical to be able to run all your broadcasts through the console as groups so you wouldn't have to pull up a new spot, and set everything.

Hi hat top and bottom? You need a holiday.

The most I have tracked at once is 18 tracks.
With my current setup I can track 24 but I don't think I will ever need to.
It is nice having a big board so you don't have to move cables around all the time.

I have the chance to get a 56 channel board real cheep.
But do I need 56 channels in a basement? NO...

Admit it.....you just like twisting knobs..... :D

lol the most tracks I've tracked was 37 tracks. This was like a L-Park kind of thing. Rap/Rock. The rap vocals took up like 14 tracks, and the instruments took up the rest., including MIDI instruments that were added in after the tracking, and during mixing. Also 4 Effects channels.

thanks for this post... deep down i was wondering the same thing. Even though I drool over a lot of the boards i see online.

some people look at women online at night...
I look at consoles.

i bet this is true for a lot of you guys too..

aloha,
Noah

lol it's sorta like that. You know, get with a woman, get bored of her, move on. I do that a lot at the studio. I'll drool over the Neve console, and then move over to the more sexy SSL console, and then go down the hall and watch the DM2000 shake it's booty :D

I dunno, I've only got an 8-channel USB mixer right now. Most of my mixing is with a mouse.
