Questions

Do you have the output gain on the compressor turned up? Are you using XLR's or 1/4"? Are you using a condenser mic? Are you going inline or inserted?

i am using a dynamic mic. The output gain is on -9. The plug going out the mic into the compressor is xlr male to female, but the plug going out the compressor to my mixer is xlr to 1/4. "Are you going inline or inserted? " I have no idea what that is.

I'm guessing you need a mic pre before the compressor??

Just a thought...

What kind of board are you using? You need to look on the back of the board for a set of jacks labelled 'Insert', there should be one right above or below the place where the mics XLR cable plugs in. The inserts are basically a send and return on one TRS 1/4" phone jack.

I have a old radio shack mixer it only has 1/4 mike and no insert could that be my problem?

Bruce was being a bit facetious here, but right on the mark!

You need to "pre-amplify" the microphone before you consider using a compressor.

Try running the mic straight into the mixer, then the mixers output into the compressor's inputs, then the compressor's outputs into your recording device. That should clear up any volume problems.

Good luck.

Jamal - I endorse what both Bruce and Ed said - I've been around here longer than either of them, and believe me, their advice is sound. In this case. :)

but i can get a mic pre amp and do it out the mic into the pre amp and out the pre amp to the compressor out the compressor into the mixer?

If that's a question then the answer is yes. But if you've run your mic through a pre and a compressor, I don't see a whole lot of need for sending the signal through a mixer at that point. Why not just send it straight to your recorder, whatever it is?

Especially since it's a Radio Shack mixer, going mic-pre-compressor is better, leave out the mixer.

Straight is great . But I need to have a head on - every now and then

I was using a compressor as a preamp once... That was exactly ONE DAY before I joined HR.com...

hehe, no shit! :D
