Why two mono drum tracks?

Cakewalk has a demo song: Don't Matter. In it, it has two mono drum tracks (spanned left and right)... What is the purpose of having two tracks instead of one stereo track? (Are the two mono tracks came from one original track or are they seperately recorded?)

Because that demo was originally made for Pro Audio 8, which didn't have stereo-tracks...
