The VOICE
I just completed my new studio build about a week ago (pictures in another thread) and thought I would post a short sample of a little experiment that I did before and after construction.
First off, a disclaimer: The audio sample posted here is not intended as any sort of "final mix", rather it is simply a rough cut of drum tracks intended to highlight the difference between tracking in a concrete basement with little treatment vs. tracking in a fully constructed, treated tracking room. The performance is sloppy at best.
The test was conducted with the exact same mic's in the exact same placements using the Glyn John's technique... Two Shure SM57's (one for kick and one for snare) and a pair of Shure KSM32's as overheads.
These were recorded over a couple of MIDI backing tracks (What You Won't Do for Love), but I left only the Rhodes and Bass tracks so you can hear the difference in the drum tracks.
For the new kids, this is why room treatment matters. You can easily tell how the sound of the kit dramatically tightens up when tracked in a proper room...
