Why is this awful noise in my recordings?

For starters everyone, I am new at computer digital recording and I need help.

For starters my equipment:
I have a Pentium based Duron Processor at about 650mghz.
A 40 gig harddrive
An Aureal Vortex 8830 Soundcard
A Peavy 150 Watt 4 channel amp
A midi capable keyboard

Here's the problem. I have this noise in the right channel of all my recordings. I've tried reducing the line-in and recording levels, everything. Although you can't hear it during the recording, you can see it on the monitor and definitely hear it during playback. I thought, maybe the keyboard, or the amp, or the connection. But even when i disconnect everything, you look on the recording monitor and the right side is showing the static or distortion or whatever it is. I'm using Pro Audio software as a multitrack recorder. I thought that it was perfect at $29. But now I'm wondering is it substandard or is my soundcard just not up to the job? Someone please help!

That sounds like typical cheapo soundcard background noise.

My TB Montego does the same thing. One side always has a noise floor much louder and more irritating than the other.

Solution: get a better soundcard. I don't think that even a $29 multitracker will add the kind of noise you describe.

you have a regular sound card...so your gonna have noise. get yourself a denoiser or invest in a Audiophile its not bad and its only 100-150

Do you really mean Pro Audio? Cakewalk Pro Audio? $29? Oh, you must be talking about Power Tracks Pro Audio from PG Music.

Dr. Stawl is right, no application worth charging any money for is going to add noise to the audio data like you describe.

This Pro Audio is by a German company called Magix. I"ve been happy with the features and everything so far. It's just getting good quality recordings to the harddrive is the problem. Could someone give me a rundown of competent soundcards in the $100 and under range. I know its cheap but I'm on a budget.

what OS are you running?
when it comes to magix most people use Samplitude or the higher end of magic(sek'd) some people use sequoia but i don't find it any better than samp6.

the only 2 cards i'd recommend are
maudio audiophile and the staudio dsp24 value.

Like C9 said: M-Audio Audiophile 2496. Its unlikely that you can find one for $100 (even on ebay), but you can surely find a new one for $150. Very quite card, good sound. Good drivers support too. It is well worth spending extra 50 over your budget. Don't compromise now, otherwise you may be looking for a new card one month later, and will end up buying it anyway.
It appears that you have Duron (not Pentium) processor. Therefore it is possible that you are having some earlier VIA chipset motherboard. I suggest that you fiind out exactly, what motherboard is in your box, and then go check for compatibility with M-audio card on their website. Some earlier VIA-based boards will work OK, but only after you install a couple of patches.

i get a God awful noise on all of my tracks...i call them vocals....

I actually have one of those Vortex cards and its not really that noisey.....

what is the noise floor on the 2 separate channels when you have nothing plugged in?

I dont recall Power Tracks having great meters....

Download N-Track demo at www.fasoft and at least have half-assed meters.....
