why is there a love affair with M-Audio

OK, this is just a question, please no death threats. Why is their such a huge love affair with everyone in this forum and M-Audio. Maybe I just haven't used M-Audio products long enough to love them, or I'm too stuck up with my other equiptment, I don't know. What makes them so reputable.

Also, clarification, I am a MOTU and Logic 7 user, gotta have a G5...yup, that's the last thing I said right before I put myself in debt.
 
I wasn't aware there was an M-Audio love fest. Most of the folks around here run the gambit of platforms.
 
This is homerecording.com Many people here have very low budgets with high expectations. M-Audio is one of the best ways to get a half way decent, fairly reliable sound card at a pretty low price. Personally, I would never install them in my studio, but I also have a higher budget than most people here and higher expectations. Nowadays, I won't even install MOTU stuff. Rme is where it's at for me until I can finally afford 48 channels of Apogee each way, and a couple channels of Cranesong or Mytek:)
 
I was a MOTU guy until I had to deal with MOTU tech support. It was the most frustrating and unacceptable experience ever. That led to me to the RME discovery. As it turns out, that whole bad MOTU experience was responsible for turning me onto a company whos product (my opinion of course) outshines MOTU in just about every category I could think of. The most important two of course being sound quality and reliability. As of yet (2+ years now) I can honestly say that with the exception of 1 promptly returned email, I have absolutely no idea about how RME's tech support is because I have never had to use it:)
 
The MOTU just transfers 1s and 0s from the HD24 so there's no quality issue. I've heard horror stories about their tech support but have never experienced it personally.
 
I use a Delta 1010LT card, and a DMP-3 preamp. I'm not in love with them at all, it's budget gear after all, hardly anything to get excited about.

They're OK considering what I paid for them but I know there's much better out there. I'm happy that the performance of the two is commensurate with what I paid for them.

Now i'm curious. What does RME stand for?

That's too bad. 'Cause for the money you should be able to get some decent support, even perhaps exceptional but most certainly not bad. If all things are equal (not that I'm there by any stretch of the imagination), I guess I'll try RME before I try MOTU. Also MOTU products look really sleek too.
 
i like the wide array of products they offer. they have everything from monitors to soundcards to midi keyboards. They are not the best out there but they are certainly not the worst either.
 
In general, good bang for buck. Let's not forget that the vast majority of users here have limited budgets. I have the DMP3 and the Octane, and think they're good products for the price range.
 
I have a pair of BX8s and they are great, especially for the low price. Other than that, I've never had any experience with M-Audio.
 
I use a MOTU 828mkII but I still have some M-Audio stuff, and I used to use the Delta cards for recording. I have always thought they were very good quality for the price, in the past allowing some people to do decent recordings who could not otherwise. They have really good support and are easy to use. I have gotten countless comments from topshelf producers on how good some of the projects I did on a little Delta 44 sounded.

I think they, in part, are largely responsible for the boom in recording at home.

Like H2H, I have a Motu 828mkII, but I don't use any of the Delta stuff because I'm using a notebook to record. For M-Audio gear, I have a pair of Solaris mics (which are amazingly versatile), I have a pair of the BX5 nearfield monitors, and one of their MIDI controllers. As someone else already said, it's certainly not the best out there, but it is really damn good for what you pay.
 
i'm not in love with m-audio....its what i can afford... i checked out other brands but its up in the air if they would work with my mobo so i question if it would be worth plunking down 500+ for a soundcard and end up having it not work.

and personally I'd never buy apogee, rme or motu in my studio because its too expensive and i doubt that I'd do enough business recording to warrant having all that
 
only M-audio product i own is a wee midi keyboard which i got just toi mess about on. apart from that all my other gear is by other companies.
 
I have the M audio delta 44 card. I thought RME sounded like crap when i listened to it.
