Back when I first joined the mixing contests would have 5 people judging and over 20 entrees. I only entered one and I think I came in 2nd from last.

But I learned a lot by listening and reading comments about the mixes.

Perdicament has a cool song posted to mix and only 5 people posted mixes.

I can't mix anything right now, since I am away from my gear. I am in San Diego and all my stuff except my bass is home in the Philippines. :(

I can't answer for anyone else, but I would guess that most people are too busy...

Well, I don't know.....

I didn't think yours went too badly. You got 5 pages so far...I think you need to bump it at least once a day for a bit...I haven't listened to the last couple of mixes on there yet, and it's way down the page. I think the clinic just gets overrun some days, and I know I get lost, and then just go to the Cave for a bit... :D

I do spend too much time in the cave. (its more entertaining than TV)
I gotta spend more time mixing/recording. I dont comment much because at work a lot of the sites that the songs are posted on are blocked.

xfinsterx last PCM had 27 entries.

I think even Finster's songs are pretty metal but maybe constant metal gets to be much for people. Admittedly I haven't heard many songs posted for mix contests, but as many as I have tend to all be metal or heavy and close to metal.

Another suggestions is that a straightforward song is harder to mix versus another with more bridges and breaks and areas where people can get creative. :)

Just making suggestions. Personally, I am not entering many mixing contests, because my PC can't really handle a lot of files right now and I'm not in a mood mix metal songs these day. Been listening to country lately. :)

Hope that helps.

My mix contest had 16 entrants and 3 judges. It wasn't metal and barely even hard rock. Just a straight-forward tune with lots of vocal tracks.
But I don't think that has alot to do with it. It might just be the time of year or something. I know I'm less into posting/recordin/listening for the last couple of weeks and things seem slower in general lately. I know this happens to me every October/November. Maybe others spend less time here during those months, too.

I'm having troubles scheduling time for me as well... :(

I AM totally determined to DL the tracks and hopefully give em a whirl before the weekend tho

:)

True that!

Answer: Laziness. :)

I love to get into mix contests just to get better at it, and it's fun to mix other people's stuff because you are less jaded to making necessary changes as you would be your own.
But I don't have access to my software or anything else, so I have to pass on most things until I get home.
Hell, I don't even have headphones or speakers to listen to anyone's stuff...

No one in neighborhood that you can leech wireless off of?
To do that I'd have to buy more stuff for my computer, and I can't afford to now.

metal, thrash, throat grunting...... call it what you will. I got bored with it a long time ago.

The early comps were a lot of fun and a lot more varied with musical styles.

The last post I read regarding a proposal to have another mixing contest, about 10-15 people offered their songs up for mixing, and almost no one offered to mix. Hey, mixing's a lot of work, and while it's certainly fun, it's several hours out of one's day.

In the future, to encourage mixers, and weed out non-serious bands, I would suggest this:

- Allow a max of 20 (or 5-10?) bands to submit a track.
- Unlimited number of mixers (or max of 100?). Mixers get to pick up to two tracks to mix.
- Each band contributes $20 towards the contest.
- $300 goes to the winning mix. $100 goes to 2nd place.
- Winning mix is posted as a "sticky post" in the Mixing Clinic for a couple weeks.

Or something like that, you get the idea. Bands are incented to create interesting music. Mixers are given a wider selection of tracks. Mixers have a reason to mix. Potential "fame" for both. Lurkers get to read, listen, and learn. Everyone wins!

These contests are meant as a learning experience for amateurs. Offering a cash prize that large would only invite pros that are looking to make a few extra bucks. Learning is it's own prize. With that in mind, giving small amounts of cash split between ALL entrants would be a better way to go. The other problem is who would be in charge of the money? Since the bands would have to pony up before the contest someone would have to hold the cash. The next problem is who would judge? Ultimately the band would need to make the decision on what their music is supposed to sound like. It just seems to me that this whole situation would invite corruption and hard feelings which goes against the intended spirit of these contests. My $.02

That's how I feel about that too. Besides, not everyone has paypal or some other easy means to have money sent to them. And who would do all that? In the past, prizes like mics have been offered for the winner. And in the past, there have always been several judges who were revered for their ear. I don't think we should polute this thing just for the sake of getting more participants.
It's just that time of year...

For me its just time, I`ve only entered one mix-off and it was great both learning and fun.
Now I just dont have the time for it, I have so much to do musically.
I hope to enter once again, its just a time issue for my sake.
Let alone that my time in the clinic is heavily reduced, I hope to comeback stronger, because I think this comunity rawks.

Just my 2 norwegian kroner

I finally downloaded the newest mix contest offerings last night but have yet to find any time to do anything with them... Took me a week to even find the time to download... :(

I'm hoping to be able to post some tracks in the future for everyone to tinker with as well... I think most folks are happy to do these for the experience of doing them and not for any monetary prize...

But I'm doing this one for a share of Ocnor's $.02 tho

:D

Well, here's my opinion, which is like... well, you know where THAT'S going. My experience was that they were NOT contests. My idea of a mix contest is to offer up the tracks for the contest and then let the contestants download the tracks and submit their BEST mix. Then the judges would listen to each mix, and judge the merits, creativity, etc., of each mix and compare them all to each other to find who created the best mix.

What I found was happening was that the "Judges" had their OWN ideas of how the mix should be and, in the form of a critique, told the contestants how to "fix" their mixes to the "Judges" fancy, which, IMHO, is NOT a contest.

This is why I don't participate.
