some people make plugins, and they are free.

some people make plugins, and charge thousands of dollars.

why is there no happy medium? i would think a plugin would be cheaper than an all out recording program...

i know there's a difference in quality...but...c'mone...

i think of other things like video games. i haven't bought since junior high, but i know they're around 70-80 bucks or something. video games are quite detailed, and have tons of programing and designing etc...

but...our recording software is 300 or 400 bucks...and a single waves limiter is 1200.

does anyone else just not get how things add up?

i know...there's a lot less demand on plugins than video games, but...how many people take one look at a price and just pirate it?

As you said, the target market is much smaller than games. Games have a huge market.

Also, most games are designed based off a game engine which handles a bunch of stuff like graphics rendering, animation, gravity/physics, etc. Using a game engine saves a lot of work in the development.

There is kind of the same thing in some audio software, pre-written code for reading WAV files, applying filters etc., but still, since audio plugins are so unique, there is still a lot of work involved and the algorithms, etc. are usually written from the ground up.

Most plugins that are free (some are good) are made by people who write stuff in their free time.

The expensive ones cost a lot of time/money to make (software developers charge out the ass). Plus the market is small. Plus they want their software to seem superior to the less expensive ones (yes, price is actually a marketing technique in some cases).
