I want to use the metronome while i record. But regardless of what i do, the metronome gets recorded onto the tracks..... HELP!!

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have your soundcard set to record everything, what soundcard do you have? someone may be able to explain how to fix it.

also, make sure the metronome is not on during playback. Set that in Tools - Project Options - Metrnome tab, or the metronome toolbar.

Okay first of all this might seem dumb to you but i have to ask: Are you recording with a microphone and letting the metronome play out of the speakers????? That probablly isn't the case but i had to ask.

Anyway, have you exported the song to a wav file or are you just hearing the metronome when you play it back through cakewalk. If the later is the case then maybe you have the metronome enabled for playback as well as record (what tropid x said). If you have exported the song to a wav file and are still hearing it then maybe, once again, you left the metronome enabled during playback when you bounced your midi stuff to an audio track and it got thrown in with everything else. (ive never experienced this but it seems like it might be able to happen, I don't do much midi stuff though).

Hope some of this helps, sorry if its to basic for you.

I have the Live! sound card

I am recording no midi at all, only digital. I have set the metronome to "play during recording" but not "during playback", the metronome still ends up on the tracks (raw tracks, no mixing). Im wondering if there is something i am missing, becuase i can open any of the included demos, and the metronome does not show up on the tracks until i try to record a track. Then the metronome is only on THAT track. Wierd. My buddy has the same version, but his works fine. Does anyone think it might have something to do with my sound card mixer?

Thanks again, any info is GREATLY appreciated.

What is you signal path for everything. Are you running stuff through a mixer before it goes to the sound card? If you are are you running the soundcard output to the mixer as well? When you hear the metronome during playback is it at the full volume level or is it qieter than when yu hear it while recording?

Signal path

I am using the mixer that comes bundled with the Live! soundcard. I use it to adjust the input levels. I am running a Peavey Classic 30 tube amp through its Send port, directly into the Mic port on my soundcard. I have tried to fix the problem by muting or adjusting the MIDI levels(the metronome is a MIDI function, i guess) on the mixer, but to no avail. It is quite frustrating. Can I use my Cakewalk without having to go trough that mixer?

Thanks In Advance

I was asking if you were using an outboard mixer, but no there is no way to bypass the software mixer. This shouldn't have anything to do with your problem but you shouldn't plug the guitar amp into the mic input on the soundcard, use the line input instead.

not enough juice in the line in port.

I tried to use the line-in at first, but it was way too quiet, even at the highest level. The microphone port works great, lots of room to move around, level-wise that is. I just got a much faster processor than what i had before, so my Cakewalk experiences have greatly improved. Except for this darn metronome problem. I dont know what i am missing. Its probably something basic, and I am just ignorant. Doh!

I suspect that you are recording with the "What U Hear" setting enabled. This basically pipes everything traveling through the sound card -- MIDI if any, prerecorded audio, the metronome, and what you're actually trying to record. Deselect it and select Line In or Mic In and adjust the input gain... If you're not sure how to do this, here's an article that tells you how:

Thanks AlChuck (and everyone else)

That did the trick. Its fixed!!!

Thanks!!

nope it doesnt work.probably never will

I suspect that you are recording with the "What U Hear" setting enabled.

my friend what is the "what u hear" setting? im dealing with my brothers setup not mine. he is operating windows ME. when i double click the speaker icon i see the choices for playback. however when i click recording i cant edit anything because its blank.no line or out. he is dealing with a audiophille2496 sound card.

i am also having trouble with cw. when i record a track it also records the previous tracks on the new tracks. i tried turning off the clone feature. i unchecked it but it still keeps popping up. i can MUTE the tracks and record and everything will be seperate. however thats hard because i cant hear whats going on and i may be off. any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the Audiophile card uses the same mixer applet as the Delta cards, in the Control Panel. It's a little confusing so spend the time reading the manual. Clearly you are routing the sounds that are already recorded into the track you are recording on.

for the soundcard the patchbay/router choices are the following:

wav out 1/2,monitor mixer,s/pdif in,s/pdif in (l/r rev) and h/w in 1/2.

im going ANALOG so these are the remaing choices wavout, monitor mix and hw in 1/2

i checked WAV OUT 1/2 and recorded a piano on CW. i tried to record bass next. i couldnt even hear the bass sounds coming out as i played. however it did record but i heard the bass and the piano on the same track when i played back.

now i checked monitor mix. recorded a piano. heard it while i was playing it and when i played it back. recorded another bass sound. both the piano and bass were on the same track.

now i checked h/w in 1/2 i can hear it before and during recording. when i play back no sound comes out. i have to switch back to wav out or monitor mixer to hear it and guess what? same thing. piano on one track and piano and bass on another track.

so i DOUBT very seriously that it is sound card configuration. must be within cw.

i have loop recording to store takes on seperate tracks.recording mode is set to over write. how do i turn off the CLONE settings? this is where i think the problem lies.

here is an excerpt from the cw help menu.

Track/Clone
This command copies a track with either its properties, its clips and events, or both. You can specify a destination.

See also:

Copying Tracks

now here is what cakewalk says when i click "COPYING TRACKS"

Copying Tracks

When you copy a track using the Track-Clone command, you can choose to copy the track properties, the clips and events in the track, or both. You can also choose the destination track. By default, Cakewalk copies the entire track to the next open track.

so i went to clone and i uncheck events and properties and i press ok. guess what? they are checked when i open the screen again. so i decided to choose the same destination tracks. same problem. it seems that the ONLY way this doesnt happen is if i MUTE the previous track. however how will i be able to know whats going on if i cant hear it? this SUX

Cakewalk handles this fine. It must be operator error. Read the M Audio documentation; it's a bit confusing but it does work.

I am using Sonar with a Delta 66 and I have the same problem. I sent an e-mail to Maudio and it went as follows (4/30/01):

Me

"I have noticed some track bleed when using a couple different recording software packages. I can record one track but then when I go to record the next I end up with the first track lightly recorded on to the second. I am using windows 2000 and mostly Cakewalk products. From what I have heard the correction for this with Win 98 is actually a windows setting but how would I resolve this with 2000?"

MAudio

"It will be resolved with an MME WDM driver which is not currently included in the driver you have. We do plan on a release in a few weeks time and it will be written in BOLD HUGE letters on our front page that the WDM drivers are MME and GSIF compatible. One thing with this track bleeding, are you hard panning in the mixing console in Cakewalk as you have to do this to
get a mono signal."

Interesting... I'm definitely not getting any bleeding under Windows 98 SE with the MME drivers...
