ok. so i got this md8 (yamaha) which i worked like a dawg to save up 4. i record instrumental music from my comp into 2 trax of the md8 but when it comes to recording the vocals, well how do i put this THEY SUCK!! and i know i dont have a bad voice, but i cant get the vocals to blend in with the music. all they do is just sit on top of the music (yaknowwhatimean?). im using a benson unidirectional cardioid mic. so there.

pleading for help

Hey KarateMeth: [ever hear of the Karate expert who saluted and killed himself?

First of all, are you using a mic that needs phantom power? If so, make sure that you turn on the phantom power switch on the backside of the MD-8.

Even the best voices in the business use Reverberation. Do you have a reverb unit?

You might also need a mic preamp; but, the MD-8 can take a direct mic on any of the 8 track feeds. XLR would be the best which you will find on inputs #1 and #2.

I do vocals all the time and have clients who do vocals and I have no problem getting a clean sound. Also, when you record two tracks and you want to do a vocal, you have to put the recorded tracks into the CUE mode; then over-dub the vocal onto one or more tracks. If you don't put recorded tracks into the CUE mode while overdubbing, you will indeed get strange sounds and, perhaps no sound at all.

yo hornet, i never heard of the karate expert who saluted and killed himself but as a hobby i cut the nerves out of my fist... just clownin

ok my mic dont need phantom power, i only use inputs 1 and 2 for vocals then cut and paste to other trax.

the best bet would be getting a reverb unit but since the music dont have reverb on it i thought neither should my voice.

as far as the cue thing goes i dont know what yer talkin bout but thanx 4 the ideas
i have recorded one song which im reasonably happy with. i just gotta put it somewhere so that everyone can hear it

karatemeth salutes
ouch!!

Yo Karete-man with no nerves:

The CUE section of your MD-8 is used when you want to over-dub tracks; like, I do a drum pattern on tracks 7 & 8; while doing the drums, I usually add chord changes on say, track 3. Now, I have three tracks recorded at once. So, I want to add bass, a horn? Need to push the CUE switches on the MD-8 for tracks 7 and 8 and 3; now, I can play back what was recorded and add another track, like horn or a vocal. After I get the drums and chords down, I can add track after track; but, EACH RECORDED TRACK NEEDS TO BE PUT INTO CUE for listening on the headset. When all the tracks are done, you now push in the button just below the mic line dial and this means all tracks are in PLAY BACK MODE, and this is what goes to something like a cassette deck or DAT and is called the MIX. This is where you adjust EQ and add reverb. [although you can do reverb when recording if you want to.]

Read the manual. If you don't follow this procedure, you will end up with a Karate salute Because that's the way the box works.

By the way, say hello to the Croc man Steve Irwin when you see him down under.

Have fun man, have fun,

Consider using a compressor. EVERYONE uses a compressor on vocals, and it will turn second grade demo quality stuff into at least semi-pro sounding material. www.fmraudio.com
