Why does the 3630 suck so bad?

I understand the low price concept. But how bad does it color the sound?

Listen with it then listen without it, if you can't hear the difference you don't need it.
 
Didn't Tape Op run an article about 3630 problems and DIY fixes? There was a simple mod involving swapping out a pair of resistors and a pair of capacitors, as I recall. There are some guys who sell 3630 mod kits for the price of the unit. Here's one link: Black Lion 3630 mod
